theres a difference between balls and stupidity.
there are old mountaineers
there are bold mountaineers
there are no old AND bold mountaineers

i learned to climb in the gunks without ropes in the 70s. we didnt know it was a sport, just knew they were awesome cliffs to climb, and me and my buddies loved to climb everything, cliffs, boulders, buildings, houses ,trees . my first job was as a mechanic in an amusement park.
the last time i did a highball was on a 40 ft boulder in southeastern harriman state park, was about 30 ft off the deck and couldnt find a way to finish. i got "sewing machine"legs, shaking violently as i realized i would definitely hurt if i fell. i finally closed my eyes and got my shot together, breathing until the shaking subsided, pretending to myself i was only inches off the ground. opened my eyes, found a way to traverse to the side, and got up and over.that was the last time i climbed without a rope. and now i havent tied into a rope in over 5 years. lost some of my nerve, and backpacking is more fun.its all good -

i remember a hotshot freeclimber probably 25 yrs ago that was trying to set a record on some climb, under a minute. It was impressive watching it, ....until he fell and died. he was literally leaping from hold to hold.
And thats the thing. I have seen many at the top of extreme sports I followed perish. They thouht the were being safe enough. But you know, eventually $hit just goes wrong. There isnt any thrill worth your life.
Got to watch a special on TV about Shane McConkey with my wife not long ago. I remembered his rise thru skiing, he revitalized skiing and coined freeskiing and broke away from the technical extreme Aholes. He made skiing cool again. He was doing back flips off of faces the other extreme guys would barely ski. He progressed into base jumping, then wingsuits, then skiing off cliffs in wingsuits and parachutes. He died when filming a ski movie when he failed to open his chute. Eventually, $hit happens. You might escape it for a while, but the law of averages will catch up eventually. The post was edited 2 times, last by Muddywaters ().
