The Sydney thing is over.
Sadly 2 innocents dead and several hurt including a brave cop.
Should all recover.
It would be best not to simply tag this as a muslim extremist thing.
It was a single deranged individual.
He had form for ranting etc and was convicted for sending nasty letters to the families of our Afghan dead.
He was a nasty piece of work and we are well rid of him.
But he was an individual and nuts. Better thought of as in the category of those that shoot up schools etc, not a part of the Islamic state or similar.
One very good thing has come out of this.
Despite all our Islamic leaders condemning it, a backlash against muslims is feared. A young lady noticed a young muslim girl on a bus removing her headgarb out of fear of attack. Out of that has started an online movement "I will ride with you" of people offering to accompany muslims to prevent reactionary types attacking them. No reports of attacks but one of the best "assimilation" things ever in this country.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

In Oz you have to have a license to buy a firearm.
i.e. you get the license before the firearm.
When applying you have to give a need,

I think it is too easy here. It took me only 30 minutes to study and take an on line test to get a concealed carry permit. The actual permit is not issued for 2 to 4 weeks until after the state police investigate you. But to just buy a gun background checks are done at dealers but last time I checked there was no background check required for sale by private individuals."Dazed and Confused"

Hunting is a valid reason for license but if not owner of substantial land you have to have written authority from landowners (2?) to shoot on their land. Must be substantial acreage. Most crown (govt) land shooting is not permitted. Handguns are essentially a no go. Pistol club membership as a minimum.
"Concealed carry". An offense here.
This is WA laws. Other states are similar but not identical. We have some of the strictest laws. Other states are following us more if they change.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -
