Trailplace 1997-2014 ???

if you go to trailplace you get the jpg shown below.

is trailplace dead?

at one time trailplace was the biggest and the best a.t. forum on the web. it began declining once dan bruce sold it and moved onto other areas of interest in his life. the current owner has not even logged on to the site in a year and a half. he has turned down offers in the past to sell it. members of trailplace have speculated that the day will come when the prepaid hosting fee will expire and the site will be no more.

so is it dead? a glitch which will soon be fixed? the catalsyt for the owner to sell to someone else? (although at this point with traffic down to almost nothing who would want it now?)

time will tell...

Someone didn't renew his domain name.

Godaddy hasn't put it up for sale yet.

Trailplace.net is only $9.99

The domain is purchased 12 months at a time so that makes sense

It would be a shame to loose those threads at trailplace. There was some good stuff there.

bob mccaw is listed by godaddy as the registrant. he is not the current owner of trailplace. he sold to jeff haas (7 sisters) several years ago.

If the guy has 7 sisters you would they could help out a little to keep the place up and running.

That's too bad. Trailplace was the first hiking site I ever found and I learned an awful lot there while Wingfoot was running it.
He seemed like the kind of guy you either loved or hated, but there's no doubt he had a lot of good info and advice to share.

he lives in conyers, a suburb of atlanta.

he stopped talking about the a.t. and began writing religous books. i haven't looked at his blog in a couple of years, but when i searched for it a few minutes ago to provide the link, i was suprised to see that he is writing a book about his first thru hike and it may be out next year.

I'm assuming the hostel I'm about to mention was only open a couple of years. In '98, I stayed at the hostel that was up the hill a couple of blocks from Elmers. The owners of the hostel lived next door. The husband was always talking about Isreal and the Middle East and how the war would be fought on our soil. He would never slow down when talking about it... I wonder if WF ever went up and chatted with him.

i watched GI Jane at WF's house. The next day he tried to help me fix my pack. It was unfixable so he went out to the garage and took out one of his old packs and gave it to me once he took his patches off. It was a Jansport external that he had used on a thru. .. Still have that pack. Looking forward to reading his book.

It is a shame. I believe there were several "reaching out" to assist with running it, paying for it....etc. I checked it everyday. Just in the last month was a thread about 7S not having even logged on in like 5 months...
when the "owner" doesn't bother..............

i don't have a twitter account, but i just went there and jeff haas still has on his profile that he is the owner of trailplace and he was actively tweeting last month (including yesterday).

makes no sense that he would abandon the site (last login a year and half ago) yet turn down purchase offers.

Except I've seen this before, on non-hiking forums. "New" owner takes over and then comes to find out, a) it's WORK b) it cost MONEY c) it's unglamorous d) it takes up time e) they just drift off.

So I never deleted TrailPlace from my Firefox favorites and I click on the "open all"...so TP always attempts to open. Last night, it opened, no "domain is up for sale". I did it again, and got the "domain up for sale". However this morning, it is again showing up. Shows I was last on.....last night. Someone renewed and brought it back up.
Thought someone might want to know.

Same here. Never deleted the "Favorites" link and it "magically" appeared this morning. There didn't seem to be any posts from this year, though. The most recent was 12/1/14.
