I have never been interested in carrying a chair when I hike. Carrying the extra weight seems so frivolous. But dang if I'm not considering it now.
I was at River Sports a few weeks ago looking at sleeping bags and they had several chairs set up in the back of the store. After looking around to make sure there were no witnesses, I pulled one of the chairs next to a table so I could hold on to something for stability, and sat down. These things are pretty low to the ground. The first one, the Alite Mantis, was comfortable but tilted back too much. It would be great for star gazing but not for trying to eat. shop.alitedesigns.com/mantis-chair.html
The second one, the Alite Monarch, looked too unstable so I didn't even try it. By this time, a sales person had come over and he demonstrated it for me. You have to do this balancing/tilting thing to keep it stable. The sales person, a trim, fit guy, had a hard time getting out of it. shop.alitedesigns.com/monarch-chair.html
The third chair, the Mayfly, was perfect (I sound like Goldilocks). It was very comfortable and easy to get out of. It can be used with 2 legs for a rocker or 3 legs for more stability. It weighs 1.6 lbs and I would definitely consider carrying it for a short trip if I didn't have a full pack.
