I've got a couple of cozy's made out of reflectix and even after half an hour the food is still very hot. Sometimes still too hot to eat. I wait as long as I can because 8 - 20 minutes is not long enough for me. The food is still too stiff for my liking.

You know about Parmalat, right? Otherwise known as "boat milk." Lasts for quite some time. Guy I hiked with long ago carried an espresso maker and Parmalat. He did coffee right, had lots of friends in the AM while breaking camp.

nido powdered milk is lighter and tastes like real cream.

My next trail meal is going to be instant mashed potatos, gravy, chicken, and dehydrated cranberry sauce. There's something in canned/pre-cooked meat (except tuna) that tastes bad to me. Maybe a preservative? I hope the gravy will mask the taste of the chicken.

And I'll definitely take some boiled eggs next time!

any chicken packet when you can find them, as noted above, becoming harder to find. chicken or pork stove top stuffing, and mccormicks gravy mix.

this dried hummus can be added with EVO and Paprika for a great meal when added to thin breads and pitas.

Laurie Ann who hikes the AT and someone I admire wrote

"Many foods, such as hummus and other dips, rehydrate quickly and easily when you break for lunch. You can buy commercially prepared powdered hummus but I like to make my own. Just use your favorite hummus recipe omitting the olive oil. Dry on lined dehydrator trays for 5 to 7 hours and then process in a blender until you have a fine powder. On the trail, add enough water to reach the consistency you like and stir in some olive oil while seasoning to suit your tastes. Such dips are delicious with crackers, leftover flatbread from dinner the night before, pitas, or even baby carrots. Dips also make terrific spreads for wraps and bagels. Roasted Eggplant Spread is delicious with foil pouched chicken and some trail grown sprouts."

The gram weenie in me says you should repackage a lot of that stuff. Oatmeal in a package in a package is redundant. I cook in freezer bags. It makes sense to me to leave the original packaging at home if I am to dump it into a freezer bag on the trail anyways. That way you save time, weight, and trash to be lugged out.

I really have taken your advise on this, for at least all of '14'. Althought I have sort-of switched back with the oatmeal sort-of...............I keep X# of days in 1 qt. bag and take X# of fresh quart bags........so I'm not commited to THIS WHOLE BAG OF SLOP this morning!

Do they make sandwich sized freezer bags?

Can you buy dehydrated cranberry sauce or do you make your own? I love cranberry sauce. I've all sorts of fancy cranberry sauce recipes over the years but nothing beats the incredibly simple original recipe: 1 bag of cranberries, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, boil until a sauce. I love the sound of the cranberries popping when it comes to a boil. I will sometimes hit it with a potato masher to help sausify it.

Just don't cut your portions to fit the bags, unless you are going supplement it with something else. Hate to see you undernourished out there just to save a few grams.

My Knorr's Cheesy Bacon Macaroni fits fine. It is larger than the oatmeal. No need to cut portion size. These bags are the exact dimensions as the quart ones except not as tall. I always roll the top of the quart ones to be able to reach into them better while eating. Why oh why did I ever buy a quart size bag for this purpose? I am making a new cozy tonight.

It had already been done. My last hiking partner put a piece of slate in my pack at Little Wilson Falls. I found it in Monson.

BB - I think your concern about foil packets is well founded. I bought some Great Value tuna in foil packets. There was some dried tuna stuck to the back of one of the packets. Maybe it happened when they put the tuna in the packets, or maybe when the shelf was stocked. Who knows. I suppose you could wash the packets and double bag.

If I do oatmeal it's one of the things I leave in it's original package. I cut the top of the bag off (usually 2 bags) with scissors as close as I can to the top and put them in my mug and add the hot water directly into the bag and eat right out of it, crumple it up and in the trash bag.

I didn't have my cozy on my last trip so put my baggy of food in my empty Jetboil, put the lid on, and let it sit. It worked just fine.

That's what I always did when I used a Jetboil...better than carrying a cozy.
