It was raining so my picture didn't turn out too good. Maybe I'll take a better one later this week.
That looks a lot like Bunchberry. I probably have passed over ginseng many times not having a clue what it looked like.
Oh my! Now that I have researched this on the web, I think I know where there is a ton of this growing in Oxford, Maine. I can't wait until next year to check this out. I camp 2 weeks a year over there.
Non hikers are about a psi shy of a legal ball. -

If you know where there is a "ton" of it, let us all know. Right now I think it's going for $650 per pound dried weight. I'm not sure what they are paying for wet root. Our season here in Tn starts September 1st. It last until the frost. .. I hate the shows they have on now showing people going out and digging seng. You are supposed to replant the seeds and leave around 30% of the patch for future growing seasons. I'm scared people are going to go out and pick every plant they see. I break the small ones off at the dirt so they grow back next year and so no one comes across the small plants and pick them.

Big money in it. The Chinese worship the stuff. There used to be a cable show about guys in WVA digging that stuff and shooting each other over it."Dazed and Confused"
Recycle, re-use, re-purpose
Plant a tree
Take a kid hiking

Slowly becoming a lost Art. Here in my neck of the woods, mostly below ridgelines. The hawks have a Migratory pattern every year that seems coincide with tha Ginseng growth in that area. Mother nature has her spots... -

10-k Your neck of the woods? -
Dmax would that not require a greenhouse to grow it?Be wise enough to walk away from the nonsense around you!

People can grow domesticated seng in their yards but it doesn't bring nearly as much money as wild seng does. I also don't know if it is still illegal here to remove the seeds from the patch. The rule was to squeeze the seeds and replant right in the area where the seng was dug. -

Thanks for the heads up. I caught it a couple of hours later on a rerun. ..
I can relate to the yellow jacket scene, somewhat. A buddy and I were at one of our spots when all of the sudden I felt the sting on my hand. I kept walking. A few seconds later I heard Joe speaking in many tongues. Apparently I stepped on the hole which got them agrevated. .. We had a one hour hike, straight up a mountain, to get back to the truck. He had at least 20 stings. I always carry benedryl for my bee problems so he took a few and out we headed.... -

Hey Dmax, or should I say "neighbor" , spent many "o" days down on the Nolichucky. Do you paddle? -
I'm learning to paddle. I did the lower a couple of times this year. I've also been out to wautaga lake a few times. I bought a rec kayak and am looking forward to spring so I can upgrade to a better boat. .. I've also swam a few of the drops on the upper Nolichucky, but that's been a few years. ..In November it a trip to Myrtle with it for some fishing at Cherry Grove.

Sounds good Dmax, last time I was down in Erwin instead going left up to the outfitter and Nolichucky, we went right ... Down to a "play spot" on the river, lots of paddelers. My whitewater time is getting less these days in exchange for flat water -
Being a land owner in the mountains and having people come steal your ginseng in the middle of the night is not fun. Yes, it is worth a lot of money. Some people do not think anything of stealing what is not rightfully theirs. Please be careful where you pick. It could be dangerous to one's heath.

I lived in Glade Spring for five years, could see White Top and Mt. Rogers from the back yard, wish I'd been into hiking then.I may grow old but I'll never grow up. -

That would piss me off too. It sounds like Dmax follows the rules when it comes to harvesting ginseng, I doubt you have to worry about him.Lost in the right direction. -

Dont worry about me. I do mine on private property that family owns. A few times I have gone out and bought permits for gov land. I messed up there. The best thing to do is go out and find it THEN get a permit and go back and pick. I did the opposite. I bought a permit for sections and the sections had no seng or it was already picked.
on the shows. It has people getting shot at. Hopefully the newbies take notice. It happens. Especially in the southern apps. Gotta watch out for the brewers and growers. But most of the brewing is done indoors now around here. We have family that does it in their barn...
Deer season starts next Saturday. More bullets in the woods... I hate being on private family land and find a poacher up in a tree waiting on a deer. All they have to do is ask permission and they would get it, unless too many people have asked. Then it could get dangerous up there.
I hate that the shows they have on hunting seng doesn't cover the rules. I'm sure most of the newbies don't even know there are rules. .... I'm looking into a transport rule tomorrow. I'm headed out west in about 10 days and wouldn't mind selling some of my best roots out there. Just hope it doesn't cost too much. -
