Like BB, love to see and enjoy God's creation.
Hate running, but enjoy hiking and it gives me an incentive to try to get (stay) in shape, because I know the more I am the more I will enjoy it.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Also like the planning process of getting from point A to point B, and then going out and trying to execute to the plan.
Of course things usually change from the original plan, but that offers new opportunities for planning and challenges. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

I go hiking because It gets me away from the type of people that don't like hiking.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.
-
To enjoy God's creations & meet like minded people.

Don't worry folks he's been hiking a lot. He'll get it in a little while.

To be able to direct my nearly autistic hyper-focus to things like where my next foot placement or handhold is. To be able to enjoy things around me. To get away from all the damned noise! (Loons and owls don't bother me nearly as much as sirens and air conditioners.) To see places I've never seen. And it doesn't hurt that it's a form of regular exercise that I can stand to do.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here.
-
I hike for more than one reason, I think.
It's a mental health thing, to get away from the day to day routine.
The physical exercise relieves stress.
Then there's the beauty of the outdoors in the different seasons.
Also, I like being different from a lot of other people.
And maybe most simple, I enjoy doing it. -

I find it relaxes me and recharges me. I have this need to get away from it all. And I like the scenery and the kinds of people I meet on the trail."Dazed and Confused"

I compare it to other craft hobbies. Why would someone do woodworking? It would be faster and easier to just buy your furniture rather than make it. Probably cheaper too, after you consider the investment in all the tools and material you would have buy. But craftsmen who build furniture do it because they enjoy it. Even if they are not very good at it, they get satisfaction out of applying their skill, knowledge and creativity to produce a tangible product that reflects their own personality and is made just the way they like it.
Same with backpacking. There are easier and cheaper ways to get from point A to point B, but there is some satisfaction doing it on your own, the way you want to (H'ingYOH), creatively applying your own knowledge and skills. And even if you're not very good at it, it's still your own hike. -
i started backpacking probably because it was a continuation of my childhood experience. every other weekend in the summer dad would take us car camping, and while fishing was the how we spent most of the time, (which i don't do now) we always day hiked on trails if the state park we were at had some.
i continue to hike (almost every day if you count day hikes) because i believe it is one of the most healthy activities you can do. i believe i will live longer and have a healthier life because of hiking.
hiking is a lot like basketball - great fun with other people but you can still do it solo.2,000 miler -
To see new scenery, plus it makes me stronger and lighterI am human and I need to be loved - just like everybody else does

I've been hiking since I was a Boy Scout in the late 70's / early 80's. I suppose I just developed a love for the simplicity of the outdoors. Now a days I have a stressful job where I see the horrible things mankind has to offer. It's nice to get back to the woods where things are simple.RIAP

I've found hiking is far less expensive than other types of outdoor recreating. Once the basic equipment is obtained, my expenditures are for replacement boots/socks.
As I also mt bike, expenses are ongoing.

I think I have the basic equipment, but still keep spending over time to get lighter. But if it helps me enjoy it more, I feel it is worth it.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

We took a drive up north today to scout out some camp sites for future trips, After passing several RV's and SUV's towing trailers with ATV, dune buggies, restored classic cars, etc... I commented to my wife that I was amazed at how relatively little money we spend on hobbies compared to other people. Then we paid the 5$ NF daily fee to walk the 1.5 trail and have a picnic at the Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary, adjacent to the NCT. -
I tried to explain it to my mom once. I told her that my spirit yearns to be in the mountains. Simple and true.Lost in the right direction.
