I rode about 14 miles today, no hiking- but I thought about hiking- does that make me a real hiker?

Over the last three years I have dumped my old Mtn bike in the weeds @ trail heads and driven up /down the trail, hiked and rode bike back. Day hikes or weekenders. The best part is that your in 'Trail country', so it is usually slow traffic and nice scenery!

I need an old bike to do this. I'd be devastated if my bike were stolen.
Does Overload ride?

Acadia is the best place in Maine to ride a bike. The carriage roads are the best and extensive.
basically a dirt/gravel "road" designed to accomodate horse drawn carriages.TrafficJam wrote:
What is a carriage road?

There are lots of bike trails here, best way to travel really in the flatlands.
Although there are lots of nice rails to trails projects popping up.
You really have to dip into the more shady definitions of stealth camping around here but you can string 500+ mile trips together and pedal from town to town with your pack in a trailer next to your cooler of beer.
Bit like canoeing without a river...

Honestly pretty much everywhere. Ive biked out Mooretown Rd to the Walmart and Williamsburg Sentara Hospital and out Rt 60 East to Busch Gardens. And all of the Colonial Parkway. The only places I wont bike is on Rt 60 West beyond the Yankee Candle nor any part of Rt 199 (not permitted any way), nor Rochameau.

Thanks. Looking for places to bike with daughter when I'm visiting. Colonial Parkway runs along the river doesn't it?

Hats off to you. I have to ride in the dark too until May but I don't commute in the colder months.

Got a very bright reflective vest for the evening commute home. This year was the fist time I ever found myself biking in the mornings in the 20s and teens. Two pairs of gloves barely cut it, and a knitted band for the ears is a great thing.

In what seems like a whole different life time I used to do a lot of bicycling.
I used to commute 30 miles a day March to whenever winter really set in, founding member of the local bicycle club, and did several weeklong bicycle camping tours with my sons when they were in their teens. All road riding as I've never had a desire to get into the mountain bike thing.
I've still got 2 bikes down the basement, a Dawes touring bike and a Trek Hybrid. I still occasionally take the Trek out and tool around town, but that's about it. The Dawes hasn't seen the light of day in years
