100 miles wilderness - best time of the year

Hi everyone, I just joined this jolly group of hikers and I'm planning to take on the 100 miles wilderness part next year. What would you suggest is the best time to go? Mid August or September? Thanks in advance! Kay

3rd week of august. but it will be crowded with thru-hikers

The 100th member is asking about the 100 mile wilderness. I like it. When I saw the title I was gong to suggest after the 2nd week in July to make sure the black flies are gone. Mid August or September? Either would be fine with me. Less chance of rain as the year drags on. Less chance of cool weather in August.

kayweber,welcome to the cafe.

late august/early september is perfect. the bugs are gone, the days still warm, and nights comfortably cool.if you wait until after labor day, the trails are less crowded, as summer brings boy scouts and girl scouts, vacationers, and like lobosolo said thru hikers.
either way,its all good.

I love the planning part, even if everything changes once you get out there. A good consolation when you can not get out there yet.

the 100 mile wilderness is nowhere as remote as it sounds, and you can arrange resupply either through shaws in monson or phil pepin out of monson. they can do food drops at jo mary rd and katahdin iron works rd near gulf hagas. the at lodge in millinocket also does food drops.
gulf hagas is worth the extra few mile loop hike. its a beautiful mini canyon.we even made the trip in the rain and felt it was worth it..antlers campsite one of the nicest spots on the entire at.

Just think about all the peanut shells that thru hikers could leave on the trail. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.

it's what a real hiker would do. but mostly weight weenies on the trail these days

ya know the guy is in his 80's buy him out level the place and rebuild it with a Hostel on top with showers and a mini supply store. breakfast and lunch thats all. 8 hours - then close - fire ring in the back, with local music... That's the way uh huh - I like it.
