I haven’t done any DIY lately, at least nothing related to hiking, but I’m about to start a repair job on my hiking pole, does that count? Wish me luck.Lost in the right direction.

I started a tarp yesterday. I'm going to make a clone of my MLD Cricket. It's an older version in 30D silnylon. If I make it out of dyneema, the materials alone will cost $350. So I'm probably going to use silmembrane or a
Silpoly. The silmembrane weighs less than an oz per sqyd, the Silpoly 1.1. Made out of either of those, the cost is only about $55. Huge difference."Dazed and Confused"

Step 3 is to make the plan to a larger scale and precisely determine all measurements and angles. Note, a 1/2" seam allowance will be added to dimensions and drawings."Dazed and Confused"

Step 5 for me is to double check quantities and then check against my inventory. Then pull the trigger on an order. After I'm finished with the project, it will be probably 5 oz lighter than the used MLD tarp and then I'll sell the MLD tarp. I'll post some more pics in a couple of weeks after I get the materials and get things layed out and cut."Dazed and Confused"

I got my materials and got the pieces cut and my abdomen felt good enough to spend some time at the sewing machine. But my machine is messing up big time and the shop here has a $50 minimum charge and I think I only paid $75 for it. So now I am looking at new machines, probably spend a little more and get something like the metal heavy duty Singer that is on sale for about $175. It says it can sew denim and canvas."Dazed and Confused"

But I won’t allow myself to buy one, I have too many dang hobbies as it is and can’t start something else.Lost in the right direction. -
It's here! But it'll be a while before I can use it. I went to the surgeon today for a follow up and everything is healing great, but still too early to be lifting this. Found out that the mesh they used to repair my hernia is actually a surgical velcro! How about that!? And the clips they left in on my gallbladder surgery are a stylish titanium lol !!!

Got the new machine set up and did some practice stitching and a flat felled seam. I think it's good to go. I'll start on the tarp in a day or two."Dazed and Confused"

I got two of the five tarp panels sewn together today. One little cosmetic goof in the seam due to operator error and I'm just going to leave it, as it doesn't affect the function or waterproofness and most people won't notice it. Plus it's just a PITA to rip out two or three inches of stitching to fix. I do need to reorder some material as I made a mistake in laying out and cutting one panel. Not sure how I did that as I checked everything twice. I guess I'll need to measure three times and cut once from now on."Dazed and Confused"

Looking great JJ,
Is your cone reinforcement another layer of sil, or do you use something different?

Tarp update. I'm taking two of the seams apart- what a pain in the butt- because I can't get them to pitch tight, so I'm going to add a catenary curve to them.
Soaking wet the tarp weighed 15 oz. A about 10.5 after seam sealing. I should have thinned the Silnet with mineral spirits but I had never used Silnet before so I went full strength. Lesson learned."Dazed and Confused"

Well I struggled thru finishing this tarp and I will never work with this material again. It is just too slippery, way more slippery than silnylon. I'm not happy with the appearance, I just could not get good quality looking seams with this stuff. I know it's cosmetic and structurally the tarp is fine but still. I got so frustrated I had to walk away from it several times and almost threw the thing in the trash, but I'm not a quitter.
