Referencing the first Darwin video, three of the five I now hike with. Good tips.
Darwin's second video is also pertinent. However as I eat a lot of cold cereal with powdered milk while on the trail, I frequently carry a collapsible silicon bowl.

pretty much personal preferance, although i gotta say i agree 100% with the things he says to leave at home.
i found it amusing that he referred to AWOL as big and bulky and thick -- and to put this kind of stuff on your phone -- while i had no problem carrying (at least) 2 paperback books, a trail guide, the ATC data book, and the ATC state guidebooks. i also had the weekly sports illustrated mailed to me. if i was in town on sunday -- the sunday newspaper came along too!2,000 miler -

I also found filling small squeeze bottles to be a pain. On the next hike I got a bigger bag and rigged up a gravity system. But the bag still has a narrow opening. I just had a cutoff water bottle as a scoop.

I've also now picked up the exact same pillow he has. I agree the videos are well done. On So many hiking videos the narrator hems and haws and gets distracted. Darwin keeps it moving.

In the past I normally did not filter or treat water but the Aquamira Frontier Pro filter is so lightweight and easy to use I've started filtering, just screw the filter onto a Smartwater bottle and drink, no waiting or squeezing....$20 at Walmart.

Hmm.....Just went and looked at the specs....says it filters 50 Gallons?? I guess you toss after a trip. And on a long distance one, you replace often.....

I seen these on line but never got my hands on one. They also make a series that filters 120 gallons and filters viruses in addition to bacteria. Also they have refills so you don't have to change the whole thing. Can also be rigged up for gravity filtering. I may try one sometime.

I started off the AT with, but since switched to combination of Sawyer Filter and Aqua Mira. Use whichever I feel like at the time ( want to squeeze or wait).

Nice to know I have a back up. Once early on didn't bring the second set of potable aqua tablets I thought I had, and had to boil water and let it cool until someone gave me a few to get me to my next resupply.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

I believe I have the same pillow now (HikerBoy recommendation). It sleeps much better, but not as easy to clean after a month of summer hiking (as your clothes bag and clothes that you wash weekly).
Life is full of tradeoffs, and we each get to make our own.

You need to use a Buff as a pillow case, keeps it clean and you can still use the Buff as a Buff during the day.

My wife Kathy almost always carries a buff -
I happen to know that someone here may claim its hiking and follow the blaze even when they are 15 miles apart.... in the dark .....uphill both ways....just don't go south when heading north.

I have a Buff or two (get them for free when I do the Komen Race for the cure 5K's). They are becoming one of my favorite bits to gear. When I was hiking the 40 mile Lakeshore trail at Pictured Rocks, it would get a bit nippy in the evenings or mornings, even in summer, due to the trail following the coast of Lake Superior. If feeling chilled I would put a Buff on my head and I felt instantly warm all over. It's also my pack towel, face rag, etc.. I will now add pillow case to its many uses.

I have two buffs. A light weight one I wear on my head sometimes while hiking when it's real hot, and a fleece one to wear as a cap while sleeping with the light weight one on my neck to keep it warm."Dazed and Confused"

I'm planning to make some buffs before winter. Would like one side to be merino and the other side synthetic. If they're successful, I'll probably give some away.Lost in the right direction.
