Actually im about 15 miles north at a hotel in Glade Spring. Will be heading there first thing in the morning!

So far, it's not bad. Spoke with a few hikers. Some going north, some going south, and one trying to figure out why he can't find a bathroom.....

I go just about every year since I live so close. I must be hitting the wrong parts. I've never found the mass party scene. Well, except back when you could pitch your tent by the river. But I bet it's been atleast 15 years since you could camp there. I stay out of tent city. So maybe that's how I miss it all? I usually leave before the bands start at night too. So maybe that's how I miss it also.

i think my favorite trail days story this year is the guy who reported to police late friday that his wife had been missing for 7 hours. the police searched damascus and located her early saturday. while my imagination can fill in the details, i'd love to hear where she was and what she was doing...

Yep, like the Doyle I want to do it once, but I am sure that will be enough.

Although I have to admit it would have been interesting to be there when they captured Bismark.

While I enjoy meeting other people, I'm not a "party" kind of guy so much.
I'd go to the Doyle again for lunch, like we did the first time.

I have no idea if that's true or not but that's what I was told by a thru hiker one summer.

wingfoot claims to have come up with the idea of trail days, including the event, talent show, hiker parade, and the name "trail days". he passed his ideas to the local organizers. this was one of the special events in 1987 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the trail. he didn't actually "organize" it.

i have no idea how much truth there is to his claim; given his interest in the trail at that time it is certainly plausible.

he claimed that his role in the creation of trail days was "written out of the history books".

Just like Benton MacKaye can be considered the visionary for the AT. But Myron Avery deserves credit for building/connecting it.
