NJ-NY AT 4/1-11

My sister and I will be hiking out of Delaware Water Gap the afternoon of 4/1 and see how far we get (both of us have to be on our way home on 4/12).

I'd like to start with a meal in DWG and probably something take-out for dinner. Recommendations of restaurants in DWG anyone?

I've got the maps and THC for this year. We're hoping for at least Bear Mtn, NY but may get as far as Pawling. Anyone have any "Do this, not that" for this section?

Just for background, I've done sections from SNP to Duncannon and we've both done treks at Philmont (kind of like backpacking Disneyland).

Well I've never eaten in DWG, sorry. Very limited supply at Culvers Gap (a tavern & steakhouse). Vernon, has good supply but Warwick has everything you need. Between Wildcat shelter and Elk Pen there is NO camping. Once in Harriman forest, get your water higher than lower, lots of old mines.If you get to Bear mountain Sunday morning you should get the Buffet at the Inn. All resupply is going to be a haul in this area. On the east side of The Hudson, at the junction of 403 and 9 The Appalachian Deli, is a good feed and basic resupply, Graymoor is a few hundred yards north of that. RPH shelter you can call for pizza! You will enjoy this section. Nothing too great a climb. The forest is open and very pleasant to visit. Keep a clean camp......between DWG and The Bear Mtn. bridge many bears roam free.

The Bakery in DWG makes a mean homemade chicken pot pie, that's the only place I've eaten, not really a restaurant, though they did have a few tables and chairs and plenty of goodies "to go"

The Bakery sounds interesting, we'll try it out, meat/socks/whatever the next iteration is!

I had actually wanted to do Duncannon to DWG, but I wouldn't inflict that on anyone. It would have been mostly ridge-top walking, but some of those gaps are kinda steep. Besides, it would be her first AT hike. I think she'd like NJ/NY better.

i doubt that the hojo that i ate at 25 years ago is still around, but if it is, you should find someplace else to eat.

i really just want to chime in on the bakery. i still remember the loaf of french bread i got there, as well as the cinnamon rolls i got for the trail.

The Rocks of PA continue from DWG up to the Route 23 crossing just before High Point. After Route 23 northbound, the trail mellows nicely.

The Apple Pie Cafe in DWG looks to have replaced the diner that had a major fire a bunch of years back. Can't offer any comments since it's new.

Horler's Store in Unionville NY (short walk from the Jersey-side of the border) had good made-to-order deli sandwiches.

Hard to believe that it's been 13 years since I did the NJ section of the AT...

I got in DWG at dark, so I just ate at the pizza place.
Based upon the feedback here, I guess I should have grabbed breakfast (and then some) at the Bakery. Will remember that if I ever get to do a Thru.
Please note lots of Deli and other options not too far off the trail in NJ/NY.

In the town of DWG I've eaten at both the bakery and the pizza place. The bakery was outstanding, the pizza place nothing to write home about. I believe there's also another eatery in town but I've never been there. There's also an outfitter in case you forgot anything.

There seems to be plenty of water in the streams this spring but make sure to filter or treat it as you're never far from civilization here.

If it weren't for the fact that my wife and I will be away hiking in PA I'd offer to help you out with resupply.

I also recommend the sandwiches at Appalachian Trail Deli with their 32oz Rolling Rock special. There is also a great little deli/general store in Pawling.

You may have missed the Pizza truck in Pawling. It is at the parking lot on 22 when you cross the Rail Road tracks at the AT stop.

I had a feeling the rocks may still be north of DWG, but I didn't want the entire hike to be PA rocks.

To truly appreciate the rocks of PA&NJ, you first need to hike through miles of VT mud.

Best thing about the ATD other than the food, is that it is right on the trail! Also has picnic tables.

Let me suggest that if you buy food there that you pack it up and carry it a short way northbound to Graymoor.
The deli is at a busy intersection and the noise of traffic wizzing buy is something less than pleasant.

Worst pizza I ever ate was a frozen pizza heated in a 1968 microwave oven in the enlisted club on a US Navy base. Cardboard would have tasted better.
