In case you missed it this summer we will have the first Total Solar Eclipses in the continental United States in over 38 years. The eclipse will cut a narrow path across the United States from Oregon to South Carolina on August 21st and last for over 2 minutes at its center.
This is a big deal. If you see it you should be making plans now. It looks like the eclipse will pass over the Appalachian Trail around Standing Indian Mountain and Mount Albert in North Carolina. What a great way to spend a day on the AT! Of course, cloudy days are frequent here, so you would probably be wise to plan a trip to the midwest instead to view this eclipse.
Personally, if I could be anywhere I would be fly into Jackson Hole Wyoming for the eclipse. It will pass over the Wind River Range below Yellowstone. If you have never been there, the Wind River Range is stunning and would be a knock out place to be hiking and view the eclipse.
Myself, I am torn. My next PCT section hike will take me to Northern California that week which is out of the full eclipse viewing corridor. I need to decide which is more important to me, continuing on my PCT section hike or seeing the eclipse for 2+ minutes. I cannot swing both
