If you go off of recommendations you may well find a gun you like, but miss the gun you LOVE. Most self respecting gun stores nowadays that have ranges will let you try various models out. Seek out one of these stores and find the gun you LOVE.
Also, ask around to some other ladies you know that shoot and see which gun stores THEY prefer. Let's face it, a lot of the guys you'll run into in these stores can tend towards the condescending end of the spectrum, they may not even know they're doing it, but that's not going to make your visit any less unpleasant. Ask around and find a store/owner/sales clerk that the ladies you speak with have already vetted and you'll set yourself up for success in finding what YOU want instead of what someone else THINKS you want.If your Doctor is a tree, you're on acid. -
Accompanied a lady friend (a LEO) to a gun shop a while back, not that she needed my advice. However waiting for several minutes for service, she motioned for me to join her at the counter. Almost immediately we were approached by a salesman intent upon providing service to me. Despite my assurances she was the customer, he continued to address me. She than casually flashed her badge and told the sales guy he just lost a sale as we departed.

One of my relatives has noticed the same problem in multiple stores. One of them they kept talking to me but she was the one wanting to buy. We left. They said something about wasting the clerk's time and I pointed out she was the one looking to purchase. And he must not have noticed me saying that point multiple times.--

Even at the Rural King, which is a huge gun seller in these parts, they stock pink AR's, pink .22 rifles, pink semi-autos and....shudder....pink revolvers....
Guns shops also love to sell to women because they think they can upsell them on a very expensive pistol easily. And, although you can't bargain on price at RK, you can at every gun store. Private gun stores count on women not knowing that the tag price on that Glock 42 is $499 but they will sell it to you for $400...sometimes $400 out-the-door...just sayin... -

Well some stores have a shooting range and allow you to rent & and pay for bullets & instruction to make the best choice... some do and some don't - perhaps that will help in making the best decision.Be wise enough to walk away from the nonsense around you!
-
Most ranges have rental guns. Call around and find out which range has the one you are interested in. Ranges that sell guns also have demo guns of what they sell....you just have to buy THEIR ammo for THEIR guns, rental or demo, so there is that expense....

I just found this as it is written from a woman's perspective. I found it interesting. Take a moment and review... then post if it was relevant to the thread.

Doesn't seem to have the same effect -
So, I've done the research. I think I have finally come up with my solution to the problem. For almost any kind of bear. With a 9mm. Seriously.
You can fast forward to 2:20 of this video. The guy isn't a fan because he is looking at it from a human v. human self-defense viewpoint. From a human v. bear viewpoint, ANY .38/9mm diameter bullet that can penetrate THREE FEET of ballistic gel, FIVE GALLONS OF WATER and still carry on is going to ruin Mr. Bear's day. Completely ruin it.
Lehigh Defense Industries 9mm Extreme Penetrator. They make it in 10mm, but with my little Glock 43 or little Ruger LCS9, anything short of 500 pounds should be stoppable with this round!
-
For reference, the second shot that went through the ordnance gel, gallons of water and hit the armor plate, hit the armor plate hard enough to kill a human. Mr. Bear don't stand a chance!

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -
That round looks screwy

In my opinion, anything louder than a .22LR should be a good defense for black bear.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Here is an experienced Fishing Guide's remarks about the 9mm:
"Shoemaker fired his first shot, hitting the bear in the neck (about 6 feet). He described what happened next:
[The bear] began growling and spinning toward the impact [of the bullet]. I wanted to hit the head but the bear was moving so fast I simply began shooting each time I could hit a vital area. I hit it six times before it turned to run off, and my seventh shot was into its pelvis area as it ran. [The bear] dropped within 6 feet of the last shot.
Shoemaker then checked his pistol and realized he had only one round left, so he waited by his clients instead of walking up to be sure the bear was dead. In short order he realized the bear was in fact dead and his clients were safe, saved by a 9mm semiautomatic handgun in the wilds of Alaska.
Hope that helps... about the two rounds. Hmm, Its more about hitting each knee? Its all you need to get away.Be wise enough to walk away from the nonsense around you! -
IF you watch the video there is a tactical reload hidden in the handle

I don't think the recoil is the main issue, it's more controlling the rush of adrenaline knowing you likely only have one shot at this and if ya miss you're toast.

FYI now that all the "fear mongered" buying off of guns is over. Hmm I post things and some may not know. Feel free to do your own research. The previous President's policies and due to mass shootings moved the American public to purchase more guns than anything since WW2.... Millions of guns. When people are told they can't have something - even old fashioned light bulbs, hording occurs....
Anyway - Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah. Manufactures want to retain employees and are now offering steep discounts for this season. So if you held off due to price... here is your chance. I always recommend a saftey course and get the proper licenses.
Here is Smith and Wesson.

The buying is still going on, it’s a gun manufacturers wet dream out there. I remember a brick of 22’s damn near doubled overnight, as did all ammo, thanks to TOAd-ministration.
