These are the basics of setting up a hammock on the trail without tree supports...
A couple of things come to mind the set up is fine for the desert but too high for poring rain or high wind chill. One would use the tarp guys with the tarp right on the ground and adjust the poles to stretch it out - in short the pitch of the tarp is much lower. You would crawl into the set up.
