Some years ago I bought a book on walking from South Africa up to the Mediterranean Sea out of curiosity.
Mostly okay... then about a third of the way they started talking about watching out for lions and hippos. Then that several places didn't like travelers becuse they might be causing crop or cattle failure due to evil magic so avoid them... So, if I had any plans, I decided to not go there.--

climbing kilimanjaro is on my bucket list. Not really backpacking though. You should worry about hippos though. They are the most dangerous animal in Africa. Fortunately there are no hippos on kilimanjaro.
