I did get a 10 mile,one night backpacking trip in and that's all good!:)

Wow, it's so wintry there. Makes me cold just looking at it.

I know what you mean about hiking solo. Sometimes it's awesome and other times it's not. But it can be powerful, especially when you're lonely, uncertain, or down and you only have yourself to rely on. You made the best decision for yourself and there's no shame in that.

I traveled halfway around the world last December largely to do a similar length hike.
Shocking HB was a bonus.

I've had people tell me that the best time to do the Santanonis is actually winter. Once the quicksand is frozen, you can cruise over it on snowshoes.

I'm skeptical.

Glad you're safe. I hear it got ugly up there over the weekend. My buddies got a spell of hail (well, graupel).

I hear it all the time. Ive said from the beginning I have no desire to become a winter 46r, but everyone that has done them in winter claim its easier in snowshoes because you are avoiding all the water , rocks and roots.
This weekend the trail was a mix of snow, water, mud and ice. Just not pleasant at all!

This is a very very late trip report for my last hike in the Adirondacks. The Friday after Thanksgiving 11/27 I drove up very early and climbed Big Slide. Big Slide is ranked #27 with an elevation of 4240'. I parked at the Garden Lot in Keene Valley and hiked up and over "The Brothers". The Brothers is one long ridge line, comprised of 3 “peaks”. It was cold, around 35-40 degrees and brought micro spikes. It wasn't icy at all, although there were sections of the trail that had ice on it, but not enough in my option to require the use of spikes. The view in the way to the top is amazing. Views of Blueberry Mountain, Porter, Keene Valley, Giant, and all of the great range. After summiting instead of hiking back down the same way I chose to take the trail down to John Brooks, which added about another mile, but was less steep.
After the hike I checked into the ADK Loj. The next morning I headed out early to Mount Colden. Golden is ranked #11 with an elevation of 4714'. This day was much colder and as I headed up towards Lake Arnold I needed to strap on the spikes. It was very icy. After about a 1/4 mile I was above the clouds and it was very sunny and beautiful. It turned out to be an amazing weekend. I contemplated after summiting Colden heading to Tabletop, but dinner and cold beer were calling me back at the Loj!

Going backwards actually makes going down hill easier.

never been to the whites, green mountain and only hiked the catskils really just on fishing trips.

I can't believe I live this close to the daks but have never hiked there.
That area is too far to go to for just a day or two.
I've driven through but that's nothing like being in the great outdoors
