Trailhead Parking
PostQuote from LIhikers: “Quote from IMScotty: “Rented a Toyota Carmry this weekend and mmostly enjoyed the experience except for one major problem... the 'Driver's Assist Technology.' Good grief, I get nagged enough at home, I certainly do not want a car that starts beeping at me if I cross a line. Since all the car companies are doing this it looks like I will never buy a new car again. ” I can relate to what Scotty wrote and feel very much the same way. ” We have the warning on our Honda(2015), m…

2019 Hiking Miles
PostNo hiking miles in 2019, my husband is fighting conjestive heart failure. I don't dare leave him alone. As long as "nursie" is watching he eats his "heart healthy" diet and takes his medicine. Without my cooking he would live on McGriddles for breakfast and Chick-Fila for supper! He has improved greatly since a week in the hospital in March. The neighbors keep asking where my backpack is though. The garden did real well in 2019!

DIY Fleece
PostQuote from Traffic Jam: “Quote from SandyofPA: “Funny thing, I just got some lightweight windblocker fleece to add a light jacket to my gear too. Mine will have a full zip front to allow me to wear it backwards with a pack on. I put a hook or snap at the collar, so I can put it on and take off as I heat up after a break. ” Do you have a favorite pattern or wing it? ” I have a Mcalls pattern from 2001 Father & Son fleece jacket, multi-sized, I use the boys large.

Sleeping Bag
PostQuote from Traffic Jam: “Quote from SandyofPA: “I have the Western Mountaineering Antelope, as a side sleeper the width allows me to pull my knees up to stay real warm. I pair it with an X-Therm. ” Good point, I sleep the same...on my side with knees up. I worried the extra space would make me feel colder. Sandy, for what temp range do you use the Antelope? I’d like to use it up to 30’s, at least. ” The Antelope comes out to play below 25 degrees. My homemade quilts are used above that. I have n…

I have hiked over 500 miles in Hoka One One Clifton2 running shoes and wear them everyday. I just killed my last pair and the new model is Clifton5. What I liked the most about that model is even when the soles are totally shot, they don't slip on wet rocks or street. They are quite cushy and helped my Plantar problem.

The way I sweat on the grips of Trekking poles and put my hand over the top on steep downhills, there is no way that design would ever work. Yuk!

Filter or Drops
PostI used a Steripen Classic for water south of New Jersey. Northern water was dark and nasty looking so a filter was needed. Only time it was a bit of a problem was creek water after rain, had to filter thru a cloth to keep the leaves out. It was wonderful drinking cold spring water after 90 seconds! I got 6 weeks of hiking out of a set of Lithium batteries, at my normal water use.

High blood pressure
PostQuote from Drybones: “Quote from SandyofPA: “Your age plays into the pressure at which medication is recommended. A pressure of 140/90 is quite normal for someone over 65, but would be far more of a concern for a young person. If you want to reduce BP naturally, try getting 30 minutes of morning sun with as few clothes as possible, no sunscreen or glasses of any kind. Take your BP before and after, mine drops 10 points on both numbers. We tend to forget we are creatures of nature, live indoors u…

Question about PA
PostI have had my husband dump me out for a hike right at the bridge that takes the AT across the Turnpike. There is a pulloff in both directions, a path and a break in the fence so I am sure I am not the only one to hit the trail this way! Your best bet for a dayhike from Boiling Springs would be to get off at the Carlise exit and head to the ATC office.

Hiking & Biking
PostQuote from LIhikers: “Quote from LDog: “Looking like the GAP/C&O is gonna happen this summer. Haven't done any bike touring in many years. I have a hardtail mountain bike, an old aluminum road bike, and a steel old-man fixie. Looking at a Salsa Vaya for a light touring/gravel bike, and getting rid of the rest. Maybe .... L Dog appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…e79b11c7e691d75ccc5858400 ” Let me suggest you start at Pittsburgh and go east. That way you'd have a 13 mile down hill from Frostburgh to Cu…

End of Fort Bastion
SandyofPA - - Coffee Talk
PostI stayed with Nigel back in 2012 when he had the karate place and was building out the craft stalls next door. He let me stay in a quiet craft stall next to him and his lovely dog while the thru-hikers watched movies til 2 AM. I wish him all the best.

Quote from Wise Old Owl: “Ok I don't know how to explain the details... but the leader forgot an integral part of peeing in the woods. The hike is next week and the part that was left out was how to lean against a tree. You squat, pull up the leggings and drop the drawers. Most find a squat log right? But if your back is supported by a living tree all is good. Please do not read between the lines on this one - water is involved. ” Tree? Squat log? This girl has been peeing in the woods for 60 ye…
