Quote from jimmyjam: “I vote for stars. There is nothing like a dark sky night and being able to see the Milky Way. If you ever plan go to Bryce Canyon check to see when their "Dark Sky Week " is. We were lucky enough to just happen to be there for it on one of our trips to Bryce and it was amazing. They had a parking lot full of huge telescopes, some over 20 feet maybe even 30 feet. I cannot even begin to describe what I saw. Even with the naked eye it was amazing. And with simple binoculars we…

I was hoping for a section on the Tahoe Rim Trail. But it looks like it's been closed due to Covid. And we don't want to take our chances next fall . So I'll save the TRT for another time. Your pictures of Aloha make me wish I was there right now! That's a great view from Dick's Pass. I think I'll go with the beginning of the month for the stars (and the warmer nights). Whenever I've planned trips to the desert I've always checked on the moon phase. I don't recall ever doing it for trips in the …

Do you prefer a full moon or a star lit sky at night? I'm planning a trip to Tahoe for next fall. We like planning early so we can figure out our expenses and to have a goal to shoot for during the year. We plan to go to Tahoe for about two weeks or so. While on this trip we hope to get permits for Lake Aloha in the Desolation Wilderness. We're going to use Aloha as a base camp for a couple of nights, then make a loop back out. Since permits are required we need to dial in our dates. We can go d…

I had a RayWay quilt I really liked, but it was a 2p quilt. This is what my wife and I used when she first started backpacking. It zipped in half which made it possible for us to each carry half of it. After a couple of hikes she wanted a sleepingbag. So about ten years ago we sold it, and got her a bag. A few years ago she started saying that we should have never gotten rid of it. She's wanted one ever since. But have yet to replace it. If we ever get a 2p quilt we'll probably go with a RayWay …

Guns On The Trail
PostQuote from odd man out: “Show her the research paper on how useless guns are at bear defense. wildlife.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/jwmg.342 ” It's more of a mental thing. Kinda like how some people can't sleep without one in a night stand, or under a pillow, at home.

Guns On The Trail
PostQuote from Muddywaters: “Quote from max.patch: “Quote from odd man out: “Also, would it be accurate to say that most (or all?) Incidences for which a gun would have any value would require the gun to be more accessible than inside a pack? ” That's the first thing I thot of. IF someone thinks they need a gun on the trail then storing it inside their pack doesn't make a whole lotta sense. ” my guess is they sleep with it cuz they're scared of things that go bump in the night....or grrrr ” That's e…

PostQuote from LIhikers: “I have a hard time with wearing a mask at work as every time I exhale into the mask my glasses fog up. I need to be able to hold my breath all day. ??? ” If you can put your glasses over the top edge of your mask, that will help a lot. My wife is washing her glasses with soup and just letting them dry with the soap on them.

Helinox Chair Zero
PostI have the REI Flexlite chair and love it. It goes on all hikes with me. The guys I hike with tried it out, and now they all own one. It's hard to sit on a rock, log, or the ground after owning one. I think the Flexlite comes in at 17 oz too.

It would be hard to do worse. ” I believe you may be suffering from metropolitan area bias. What may be needed for metropolitan areas like Atlanta and its suburbs is not the same for rural GA (same with other states). I live in a town of a little over 20,000 and other than not lettin…
