Hiking plan for 2024
PostWhile the the HMW may not have as much elevation change as other places what it does have is glorious beauty. Kathy and I stopped any number of times just to enjoy our surroundings. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't have to rush through so fast that you can't enjoy the place.

Hiking & Biking
PostThis evening Kathy and I packed our bikes for an overnighter tomorrow . In the afternoon we'll ride the 14 miles to a county park that has a campground. We'll spend the night and then ride home in the early afternoon. Looks like today was the last day of rain for the next few days, so while the campground may be wet, ar least we won't get rained on.

Hiking plan for 2024
PostEven though I don't plan to use my phone very much during our hike I did down load the AT guide on the Far Out app. It seems like there's a ton of info there, makes me wonder how they keep it all up to date.

Hiking plan for 2024
PostKathy and I just bought Amtrak tickets to Harper's Ferry were we'll start our LASH of the southern half of the AT. We also reserved a room at the motel for that first night as we didn't want to start walking as late as the train gets in at 5:16. So June 4th will be a travel day and we'll start hiking on the 5th. Oh boy, I'm excited!

The other day I had an article on my phone about a man from N.J. who died on the AT in Pennsylvania. His body was found the day after someone reported him missing. Technically it wasn't a rescue so I didn't post it here.

Hiking & Biking
PostKathy and I got out for a bike ride today of 13.87 miles through some hilly parts of town. Mid way through the ride we stopped at a bagel shop for lunch. We sat at an outdoor, sidewalk table and had a.good conversation about our upcoming AT hike. I'm getting excited about and am looking forward to the hike. Although to be honest I am nervous about it as we've never hiked near that far before. According to the A T Companion it'll be 1026 miles.

TOPO Ultraventure
PostI recently bought myself a new pair of hiking shoes to break-in for our up coming LASH of the AT. I got a pair of Oboz Sawtooth, I've been using that shoe for years and I don't think I've ever had a blister with them. But boy, they sure are getting expensive, $165 at my local REI for the "waterproof" version. If they had had my size in non-waterproof I would have gotten that, but they didn't.

PostAnother option for photography, and fishing, would be Katadyn Woods and Waters National Monument. It's a park not a far drove from Baxter. It has the International Appalachian Trail running through as well as other trails, water courses and places to camp. It has a web site with more info.

PostWelcome to the cafe. Since the AT runs through Baxter park for about 10 miles your plan should be easy to accomplish. Start at the ranger station at Katadyn (spelling?) Stream Campground and hike the trail southbound. Go as far as you like then turn around and hike back, things always look different going in the other direction. Above all, enjoy yourself !

Quote from rhjanes: “Quote from LIhikers: “........ then the front moved and it's 68 degrees at 7:30 PM. Winter coats weather here! ” now that's funny, but I know it's true. Years ago I went to Tx, in the DFW area, for some training for my job. One morning I was standing outside the building waiting for starting time, I think I was in a Polo shirt and maybe a windbreaker with temps in the 50s. Employees were coming in with parkas, gloves, hats and scarfs. I asked someone if I missed a forecast f…

Hiking & Biking
PostYesterday I finished converting an old (from the 1980s) touring bike from drop handle bars to upright bars. Today I took it out for a short ride, what a nice change. Most of the parts came from Velo Orange, handlebars, brake levers, bar end shifters, rubber bar grips, and cables. It was an easy job with nice results. Next will be a refurbishment of an old tandem we have.
