It always struck me when I went in and some boy scout was in getting fitted for his "Philmont" pack. They looked like Everest climbers without the down suit. Kid weighs 160 pounds and has 55 pounds of gear. ” Probably somewhat unfortunate but usually a combination of not having the finances to buy the smallest lightest of everything and (even more so) that if those in …

I find it remarkable how backpacking gear traditions can be so entrenched. I am not sure if it is the retailers who are influencing the buyers or the other way around. I suppose it is both, like ants endlessly following each other around the rim of a cup, feeding an endless loop of misinformation. For example: The retailers will tell you that you need a large pack for a long hike and a small pack for a short hike, when experience tells me exactly the opposite is true. People out for a camping we…

Speaking of Cincinnati, Fifth Third Bank is a Cincinnati-based bank known for having the dumbest name and also its own "hamburger", the famous 5/3 Burger. It was launched in 2009 for our local Single A baseball team that plays in 5/3 Ball Park (in Grand Rapids MI). It has five 1/3 lb patties (5/3 lb, get it?), five slices of cheese, a cup of chili, Fritos, salsa, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes on a one-pound bun for just $29. You got a T-shirt if your ate the whole thing. "Nutritional" Data: 4…

Quote from max.patch: “Last night the Mets were at the Reds. NY Met announcer Gary Cohen gave a review of Cincinnati Skyline Chili. While Cincinnati chili is a still menu item at various local restaurants, 15-20 years ago a franchise Cincinnati Chil Restaurant opened in a suburb of Atlanta. It was probably Skyline, but I can't remember for sure. I had what is shown in the video. I went once. It didn't last long before it folded. Today I mailed on one of my old pairs of Darn Tough socks for a warranty replacement. The soles had won very thin and they have 4 small holes. The form you fill out ask how old they were. I don't think it matters what you answer but it was a required field and I had no idea how long I had them. I put 3 years.

For those of us from MI? Maybe. But then I've seen questions that seem obvious to me when three contestants from other parts of the country have no clue. My wife (with two degrees from UofM) asked "Why would they do that?" I say "Duh, They are OSU a$$holes!"

We couldn't ask for better weather for a holiday weekend. After 2 weeks of rain, floods, and tornados, we had low humidity an highs in 70s to low 80s on Fri and Sat. Then we had high humidity and temps in the upper 80s for Sun and Mon.

This video has been all over the news. A boater caught a cliff drop at Pictured Rocks NL. The top of the cliff is where the North Country Trail follows the edge. I attached my picture of the trail through that section when I backpacked it 6 years ago. You have the option of hiking on the left side of the larger trees. Of course I walked right on the edge. youtu.be/7IPpEMLXAygappalachiantrailcafe.net/index…422e4cf36cc4c3bbc02e89b54

Quote from rhjanes: “Where did Dallas rank? We also have a WNBA team. And the Frisco's Rough Riders. ” So what constitutes "major league sports"? I have updated the calculations to include both the WNBA and MLS. If there is another league pretending to be a major league (I'm talking to you CFL) I'm not interested. I also lumped all the Tennessee and Carolina teams together. Here is the complete list. * City * Suckiness * Detroit * 16.2% * Cincinnati * 19.0% * Miami * 24.4% * Montreal * 31.1% * P…

I did some recreational statistics the other day. The Q: Are the Detroit sports teams as bad as we think they are? So I took the final standings for MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL from the last complete (i.e. pre-Covid) season and ranked them from high to low winning % (points for NHL). Team were given a score from 0 to 100 equal to the % of the other teams whose record was worse. I then averaged the score for all teams from each metropolitan area having more than one team (e.g. SF, Oakland, and San Jos…
