Curious if anybody participating on any trail crews 2021, any trail. Assuming they happen. Many were axed last yr. Kind of toying with the idea of one myself in CO. I love that you give a week or more of your time, pay all your own expenses, and they still charge you......but a good cause

I wouldn't blame it on trying to be light. I'd blame it on ignorance of conditions and hazards, and how to safely travel in that terrain. There's times when you slip, you will just slide a little. There times you intentionally slide, a long way, ala glissade Then there's times where if you see slip, you die. Respecting the difference is the key

  • Is REI getting too big?

    Muddywaters - - Gear

    Post

Been in rei stores 2 times Bought an Al pot in 1 for scouts, that's it. I did order a sleeping pad from them once because of return policy. They really have nothing I want. I have a friend that works at the flagship store in denver. he's retired, second "career". I met him on the CT. He also had hiked the Camino. None of his gear was from REI.......cottage gear, etc. I pointed that out to him.

  • Corona Virus and the Trail

Viruses are different. Many are not significantly communicable until they enter a shedding stage , at which time the host has symptoms. This virus is much more contagious, and much earlier than many. It also persists outside the host apparently. Then there's the whole mutation problem....which is why flu shots are of limited effectiveness, and need a different one every year. Only time will tell the efficacy of these vaccinations as it applies to slowing spread. I see the word " might" used a lo…

Quote from Astro: “Wife and I both received our second Pfizer shots today. I guess I will be carrying my vaccine card around with me this summer on Bartram Trail, rest of NH & ME on AT, and the Colorado Trail Collegiate Loop. At least that is the plan. ” Why? Being vaccinated only means you are unlikely to ill from it. Your immune system recognizes it quickly. I don't think it means you cannot contract it at all, or spread it. The chances of being less sick....do mean lower chance of spread. But…

I will sleep in shelters when theres no one else around , it's easy But other trails do fine, actually do better.....without them. IMO. Decent tent pads.....flat and no rocks, more picnic tables, bear poles In tent pad clusters.......are useful.

I'll reword it: No one cares enough about it, to not hike. Which is precisely how it should be. Nobody should be hiking for a stupid piece of paper, or name on some list. Make your own piece of paper if it's that important to you, pretty simple to do

Shelters are a problem Just get rid of the grafitti covered ratboxes. Build tent pads, leave privy's and picnic tables It would cut way down on stupid people, as well as spread people out more anyway. During 1/3 of year there's 40 -60 people per day coming to shelters on southern AT. Only 6-12 can use them anyway. Very little benefit for most.

No one should give a crap what they "recognize". And obviously........none do. ATC is too full of themselves.

Quote from LIhikers: “It's winter. We haven't had a good one in a number of years. ” I remarked to wife in dec after a week of cool temps......last yr the grass in our yard never turned brown. This yr it did. Grass used to always be completely brown in winter.

About 1/4 of our area been without power a day. Fortunately we are good. 25 yrs ago when our daughter was 5 mo old the heat shorted out in our new house....on a weekend where it was 19-21 degrees 2 nights in a row, 30 in day. I slept on floor in front of fireplace with baby....3 ft from the fire it was 42F. Rest of house was really cold. Yup, glad we got power. I got a generator but the one little electric heater I got probably wouldn't do much unless we huddled in a closet

Quote from rhjanes: “Yep, zero traction on ice, 2WD or 4. ” There's often a little because the ice is rough...not smooth. But it's not much. I've gone out and driven around carefully on neighborhood roads coated in 1" thk ice after ice storm...in 4wd...at 10-15 mph. Dash of snow on top makes much more driveable ....done my share of slipping around too on slick stuff that are really smooth......that's when put one tire in grass Truckers used to pour bleach on tires....softened the rubber surface …

Iced road has almost no traction. A 4wd can drive in it on flat ground if keep speed very low..20-25. I've had to put one wheel in grass before off road to go around slightly inclined curve on iced road before. North of amarillo toward capulin NM, used to always see 4wd vehicles .....jeep cherokee etc....in ditches and fences when we drove thru the day after a front. A lot of TX or other Southeastern drivers headed to CO would think having 4x4 made them invinceable.....only to end up off road wh…

Quote from rhjanes: “Y'all probably saw the 100+ car/truck pile up here in north Texas/Ft Worth. Glaze ice hit that area of elevated freeway, which drops down into the Trinity river, so people were going along at 60+ MPH, over the hill and....ICE. Sadly, 6 fatalities. Almost 24 hours to clear the debris. Saturday, we actually got up to 30! I took the dog for a 3 mile forest hike because after this, it is a polar event. Inside pack If it wet....either outside pocket or inside Everything gets wet when it's wet. My clothes, insulation, sleeping pad.....go in dry plastic liner. Maps, electronic type stuff too. Most of my stuff is in ziplocks so that helps too. Med kit, headlight, spare glasses, etc. Everything else, can and will be wet If not from rain, from wetness and condensation . Resistance is futile.

Look good. I got blackrocks. Weigh about 2 oz so not hesitant to bring in sub 40 weather. Strictly a camp thing. Keep hands warmer while dinner soaks is about it. If it's cold my fingers are near numb by that point anyway.

Can't watch . About 700 hopeful thrus each year dont make it out of GA. Honestly.....I can't see how....hiking is pretty simple. Walk...eat....sleep. But, it's so. Yeah....even morbidly obese and very elderly can do it at 5 mpd. Some people just don't have what it takes upstairs....somehow. Perhaps they don't really want to be there......just thought they did.
