Took a walk today
odd man out - - General
PostWow! 70 degrees, not a cloud, light breeze, and a weekend. Went for a walk at our favorite local park (maybe 1.5 miles). I will definitely need to step it up before summiting Katahdin in August.

PostQuote from Sarcasmtheelf: “Funny side note to today's question. Apparently we have no idea what the tribe we claim to get the name "Appalachian" from was actually called. IIRC the account I read, the name only survived in a single document written in Spanish and was most likely provided by a different tribe long after the actual "Appalachian" tribe had died out. Being a translation of another dated translation and it's entirely likely is sounds bears little resemblance to the name the original w…

We drove 4 hours to Northwest OH (a park right by a NCT trailhead, west of Lima). Traffic was bad around Fort Wayne. It was right where the I69 and several US highways meet at the edge of where totality so it was the bottleneck. We took some back roads to avoid a couple of backups caused by accidents. There were some high thin clouds that did not obscure anything. The partial eclipses pics weren't very good - taken with a cell phone through eclipse glasses. The total eclipse picture was with the…

PostThere were reports of Snow Geese in an industrial park in Zeeland, so we went to find them. If we failed, it would have been a figurative wild goose chase. But we did find them, making it a literal wild goose chase.appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16521/

PostI just figured the half way point is in PA near pine Grove furnace, so the sign was just a little bit closer to GA than that.

PostQuote from hikerboy: “The plan begins today. ....Cool Breeze is picking me up in Gainesville and getting me to FS 42 and Springer. From there, who knows? I've been known to change my plans more often than some people change their underwear. Let the adventure take me where it will! ” Happy trails. I'm not one to change my plans or underwear all that often. Oops, TMI. Check in from time to time with trip reports, if you are able. I'm hoping to do the HMW to BP in early August, so if you turn right…

Quote from StalkingTortoise: “A buddy of mine from the Pittsburgh area is coming down for my Eclipse Party. He drove down to the KC area (IIRC) for the last total eclipse and experienced some madness after the event was over - Google maps showed every road in red to signify complete gridlock. I'm taking that anecdotal observation as an incentive to pick up food and snacks by this Friday, not on Sunday or Monday. Forecast as of today is for partly sunny skies. ” I was wondering about traffic. I g…

PostA favorite trail snack are French's fried onions. The plastic tub they come in is perfect for packing Pop Tarts to keep them from getting crushed in the food bag. At least the fried onions are healthy because they are a vegetable. Right?

it's been shown that forecasts beyond 10 days are no better than random guessing. So I will wait a few days before worrying about forecasts. The average weather is your best guess at this point, and that is definitely cloudy. The article about the 10 day forecast limit asked if it was ethical for web sites to post a 14 day forecast as it was giving the false impression that their forecasts were better than the pages that gave a more honest 10 day forecast. At least Scotty admits those 14 day for…

PostMy wife is a birder, so if we are out for a walk, and I turn around and she's not there, I figure she probably stopped some time back to look at a bird, so I have to back track to find her. I'm more of a plant person than a birder.

PostQuote from Astro: “Quote from max.patch: “3) Alfred Hitchcock in just about everything he did. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…ances_by_Alfred_Hitchcock ” He made so many good ones, but my favorite was North by Northwest. ” Me too. In NbNW, the Hitchcock cameo is in the opening credits sequence over NYC street scenes and you see Hitchcock miss the bus at a bus stop. The closing sequence is also famous. Eva Marie Saint climbs up to join Cary Grant in the top bunk of their sleeping car. They cut to…

PostI use Mapy.cz (from the Czech Republic). It is a basic navigation app. It has a tracker, but I haven't used it much so I'm not sure it gives you more than distance and elevation change. But is allows free downloading of maps for every country in the world for offline use. Maps have great detail and most hiking trails are shown. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16515/
