By 8:30 it was 22, lake effect snow (we have a large lake for Dallas water supply a few blocks to our north), with 40 MPH gusting winds. Yes campers, the first Arctic Blue Norther' had blown in. Low tommorow is now up to 2*, but with Real Feel of -25*. Ran by grocery store and office tonight in case we are snow/iced in for a few days.

  • I never stayed at any of their places by choice. Plus the Inn at Long Trail is a great experience when around Rutland. I know I have stayed there at least three times (but I believe actually four). And one time was for two nights when I picked up my "orphan gap" miles from replacing my phone in 2016.

Quote from odd man out: “when I was a kid we would visit my grandfather's farm in NE. They had a real windmill that pumped well water into an elevated wooden cistern, that would flow by gravity into the house. When water came out of the overflow spigot at the top of the cistern, you would shut off the windmill by tuning a crank that pulled a cable to rotate the windmills tail so it would not face the wind, and stop the pump. When the water pressure in the hose got low, you would turn it back on.…

Correct answer still not available for today's question, but at least I rememberd what they think it is. Of course it is easy remember a mountain when you have to go down it on one leg after you tear a meniscus in the other knee. Another good reason to use trekking poles.

  • Quote from jimmyjam: “This is why I like to cook and eat at a shelter and then hike on until I find a stealth spot. The only animal that's ever bothered me at night has been a group of deer because I unknowingly camped in the middle of their browsing patch. ” I did this some in Maine. Preliminary data shows that 2/3 are dead within 4 months by various means…harvested, hit by cars, etc. Such a shame. ” What's more of a shame is that there are annual bear hunts in many eastern states that kill thousands of bears each year. A habituated, nuisance bear is the one that needs to be down., but bear hunts don't discriminate. ” Strikingly similar to gun control.
