Astro, I had no idea the Mt. Greylock Memorial was so pretty when it was lit up at night. Now I'm going to have to return for a night time visit.

  • Quote from StalkingTortoise: “I'd pay to see his first experience with bear cables. And the subsequent berating of a ranger because there were no posted instructions. And has anyone really claimed they climbed Mount Washington 'on foot' after driving up in a car, golf cart, or hoverboard ” Bear cables would be cheating! And hey, I still had to climb that last 20 feet up from the Mount Washington summit parking lot!

  • I did not know about this book. Great to see a new take for a trail book. I read the reviews on Amazon and one reviewer took off a few stars because the book did not mention any golf courses. They were serious. You cannot make this stuff up. Matt_C is gonna love this book

When I first heard this I thought it had to be a murder/ suicide situation. Apparently not. ” This sad story finally has a conclusion... boston.com/news/local-news/202…trail/?p1=hp_featurestack

  • Thanks for the information Max. Just another minor hassle for thrus. Looks like they allow a 'digital' permit so as long as your phone isn't dead it should not be too hard.

  • Hello Stinkfinger, I'm going to go with starting at Springer Mtn. If you want to complete a through hike, you are going to have to face the south in the summer at some point anyways. It might as well be now. (And trust me, me all have our gripes, but the mosquitoes in the Maine woods in June is not something I would enjoy). I think OMO is correct, this is more likely to be a three year adventure. But so what? Start with your two-year plan and see how it goes. Adaptability is the key to success. …

Stinkfinger, Welcome to the Cafe. I think doing the AT in halves is a great way to do it. Hopefully, you never get tired of the trail that way. I know for myself, I like to take hiking in even smaller bites, two or three weeks at a time. June will be here before you know it. Are planning on NOBO? Springer to about Harpers Ferry the first year? I think that is what I would shoot for if I was doing it that way. Scott

Quote from odd man out: “As we are discussing helicopter rescue and insurance, it made me think of a scam that was taking place in Nepal recently. Guides leading commercial trekking groups into the Himalayas would plan an itinerary that would be almost guaranteed to give most people altitude sickness (headaches, nausea). As soon as the clients have a symptom, the guide tells them they need to be rescued. A helicopter comes and takes them to a hospital in Kathmandu where they do a bunch of tests …

Helicopter rides ain't cheap. I did not know Garman offered 'rescue insurance.' Seems pretty risky on their end since so many Yahoos think pushing that button calls a concierge service. I am pretty sure they will cover expenses in Dixie's case. They would be foolish not to with all her followers.

Quote from max.patch: “Coming to Netflix July 23, "Happiness for Beginners" -- a movie about a group of people backpacking the 51 miles of the AT in CT. Ellie Kemper makes this one a must see! youtube.com/watch?v=45Iuy6YmMBs ” Finally got around to watching it. A lighthearted RomCom. A 'Hallmark' type movie. There are worse ways to waste 1 hour 45 minutes. The movie certainly made Connecticut and Bear Mtn. area look beautiful.

  • RHJanes, "I still wonder about the "Thousands" who agree with him. Yet his video's, most have under 100 views after being up for months." I'm beginning to think 'the thousands' may be the voices speaking to him inside his head.

  • Quote from StalkingTortoise: “Apparently, ultralight has no relationship with the mass of an item. It's all about volume. And 90% of the people out there who don't understand this have no right to be hiking or camping. ” Hmmm. I'm going to have to rethink everything I thought I knew about Physics, mass and the Force of gravity.

LIHikers, most hikers seem to be using the Apps now. Not me, so I cannot tell you if they are any tailored to SOBOs or not. Have you picked out start date yet? I'm thinking SOBO southern half, end of August might be a good start time. Hopefully you would miss the worst of the summer mugginess, and still be home before Thanksgiving. Scott
