I love talking about my favorite subject.. One more bit of trivia cuz I can't help it.... Merino is sheep fiber but because the diameter of the fiber is so small, it's less itchy and more comfortable than other sheep fiber. That's why it's become so popular for outdoor clothing.” Thanks for the explanat…

Quote from Dmax: “Yes, different clothing would have been nice but it wouldn't have changed the amount of times you fell or having to back track. ... The best thing to do is just be prepared for all conditions. But that doesn't mean carrying all kinds of weight. Sometimes it means stopping, pitching shelter, and getting wet clothes off and get warm. Tomorrow is a new day.” You are so right about that DMAX, that was the biggest lesson that I learned out of the whole deal and one that will forever…

  • Do you hunt and/or fish?

I have never caught a fish in my entire life and I was raised in Florida. I have caught gators though. I think there is more action in gator hunting. A guy like me, one who is highly hyper active, can not just sit around waiting for something to bite his hook. I do not hunt, well, anything besides gators during gator season. Have you ever heard of our Floridian Skunk Ape? It is supposed to be the swamp edition of Big Foot. I have never seen one or met anyone who has, but I know a guy who claims …

Quote from Dmax: “It wasn't too long ago people wore cotton. .. They might have saved a 911 call if they all had a 0* sleeping bags and a shelter.” I made the cotton mistake last year when I set out on the A.T., but it was not by choice it is because it was all that I had. I got caught on top of Blood Mountain in a freezing rain storm and ignorantly kept going. I was wearing cotton long johns, denim jeans, a cotton t shirt, a cotton hoodie, a Free-Tech synthetic jacket, and threw and emergency p…

His knees (I think it's a long time since I read it) were giving him trouble the whole way. I liked Robert Rubin's book better "On tbe Beaten Path".” Some of us do hike in pain. It is the only option other than not hiking. I have meniscus issues. I mentioned my legs a lot on my SoBo. It wasn't until I read about myself on a blog that I realized the effect it was having on other…

Quote from Dmax: “This article is about the 3 hikers in the Smokeys a few weeks ago. Well, maybe I shouldn't be calling them hikers...” I'm new at long distance hiking in winter weather and even I have heard the saying "Cotton Kills." Why would anyone be carrying canned food though? I have never met a hiker anywhere that carries cans because of the weight and the absurd amount of waste to pack out. Then again they would probably just throw their cans into the fire and think "It will melt away." …

Quote from LoboSolo: “cowboy camping is easy in the whites. don't rely on hammocks or tents” This may sound like a lazy statement, but I really hate pitching a tent. I am aiming to shelter most of the time and only carry a tent just in case I get caught in bad weather and need a place to sleep out of the elements at night. I learned while riding my bicycle that I hate pitching the tent but when you are stealth camping along the side of a busy road it is better to pitch your tent so you can use y…

I bet SoBos will be a treasure trove of information for me a I hike NoBo. Vice Versa for me to them. I guess that will be a big part of my trail bartering, you…

Quote from Mountain-Mike: “To get thru the whits without having to pay for a site can be tuff since many shelters & campsites also charge. If you are their early enough you can do "work for stay" at most even in the huts. Mostly cleaning at huts, or site work at campground/shelters. Huts are like a remote B & B where those that can afford it ($100 a night) can hike from one to the next getting dinner, breakfast & a bunk. The usually let 1-2 thrus do work for stay per night. None of the lakes are frozen at the moment although a thin sheet of started forming along the banks of Lake Canterbury. It is curre…

Okay, here is another question of the winter wonderland variety: What are the odds that a person is going to need snow shoes on the A.T.? I know that you guys recommended that I get some microspikes, which may or may not happen depending upon if I can get a trail-side job like Mountain Mike advised me to do. Which was excellent information and an Idea that I had not thought of. Also, ice axes. Same question. Exactly how imperative is it to have those as well? As long as I am asking wintery quest…
