    Our thought is that we'd like to start as soon as we can. If the heat is high we'll hike slower. When we hiked in PA it was over 100 degrees so we'd take a break in the afternoon and do our miles in the morning and evening.

    My suggestion would be to do Damascus, VA to Massie Gap/Grayson Highlands State Park. It's about 32 miles. Then contact Lone Wolf for a shuttle. You could either park in Damascus, hike to Grayson Highlands then get a shuttle back or park at Grayson…

    I am not sure how many AT hikers actually know that Mt. Mitchell is actually the tallest point east of the Mississippi. I think there is a trail that now connects the AT to Mount Mitchell, but I have not heard of any thrus making the side trip.
