How to modify Scalloped potato to FBC or pots.

This modification has a few surprises - I picked it over the IDAHOAN Au Gratin for a couple of reasons. And when they say 1 ounce =1 dinner.. well read on.

1 carton = 3 Dinners. So buy one box and have nido on hand They show up at bottom dollar at $1

Using a scale or a cutting sheet divide the potato packet into three and the powder into three.

Add one tablespoon of Nido to each separation and bag in Proprietary Glad Bags. Add a dash of Oregano or favorite spices.

Each bag is shy of 1 cup of boiling water. Reduce to 15+ minutes on simmer or FBC cozy Enjoy with a spork!
1.7 oz = 233 calories add bacon bits if needed.

well OK I took the box at 5 oz and divided by three. 1.6 dry still = ???

Ok from the box 5 servings as a side 140 calories prepared x5 =700/3=233 calories pers FBC. (Thats three dinners per box or three 2oz bags.) ITs loaded with carb and 45 calories of fat, so I don't think you will wake up hungry. If you try this at home and are unconvinced about portion size. Divide by two. But here we are talking Dinner for 50 cents. (these can be picked up at a dollar store.) IF you want to go all out add bacon bits.

I am trying these at home and preparing them as I write this. Thanks for pointing it out it wasn't clear.

IF you want to divide the box into two you ditch the Glad bags in favor of mini vac seal bags that can hold two cups of boiled water. Now you may have another issue... is your Ti pot big enough? 350 calories at this point

I guess I should explain my trail eating habits. I eat breakfast and dinner, but usually not lunch or snacks. So I try to get half my calories at dinner.

I usually figure on about 150 g of dried food plus 2 cups of water for a trail meal. Looks like I'd just use the whole box.

I think what they should put on label is feeds one hunger hiker. I can always eat those 2 serving pouches. I have had a little trouble eating the mountain house deserts that say serves 4.

So my question to all ....cus you are clearly certified. When I post these ideas and test them at home would you try it on the trail or
1. does it appear to too much work?
2. not appetizing enough?
3. Appears to be super fun and cant wait to try it.

Sorry for not posting about burger sliders on the trail...

It would be number one. Simplicity is the key for me. Boiling water is as far as I want to go. No simmering, no stirring. Dump water in and wait. That's about it.

that's interesting. I thought I addressed this. But I get it...

Here is my take a glad bag with 1/2 or a 1/3 of a box requires a boil of a measured amount of water and a simmer about 20 minutes. And I get it different strokes. Why does this sound like more work?

The taking the box or bag apart and dividing it. And the simmering. Simmering requires the stove to stay running and more than likely some stirring. occasionally or constantly. Dividing it up wouldn't be such an issue if done at home for a short hike but for a longer one doing it while on the trail would get bothersome to me. Grab it and go would be what I would be looking for. Then there's the simmer issue. I don't think I'd want to try and simmer in a freezer bag and I sure don't want to do it in a pot that I'd have to clean. About as far as I go with that route is cup-o-soups in my coffee cup. Then I just drink that clean with coffee or nido or Gatorade and water.

I think you are overthinking this. Quite a few Freeze Dried meals require dropping a cup of hot water into the metalized bag stirring the contents wrapping the meal in a jacket and waiting a period of time. This is no different - but requires a 1oz cozy. No pot to clean.

If you don't have a cozy then yes you do have to simmer with a stove and a dirty pot.

I appreciate the thought you put into this and for sharing it with us, but I'd rather stick with boiling water. I tried to simmer in my jet boil and it was a pain. I haven't tried it with my pocket rocket.

WOO, will I still be on topic if I ask a question about dividing food?

I'll ask anyway. What's the easiest way to do it? I measure everything then divide it into 1/2's or 1/4's. Dividing up the seasoning packets can be a pain and the whole thing requires multiple bowls and measuring spoons. Would it be easier to do it by weight? Maybe put a bag on the scale and pour the food into the bag until it's the right weight?

Woo, ATM knows how to freezer bag cook. Everything is a choice. Those that "prepare" meals on the trail (like AK) have superior food. Those that look for calorie densities and ease of preparation over wonderful creations, choose oatmeal and knorrs. The food is a means to an end for some of us. We want it palatable enough to eat with the proper stuff in it in a manner that is as efficient as possible. Some of us go to the trail for just the trail. Some have a more complete experience in mind. The cooking wonderful creations miles away from a kitchen gives them pleasure. Neither position is wrong or right. It is just a choice. Those of us that streamline things are envious of the baked bread we see, but not enough to bake it... and no... I never yogi. I understand you are seeking a middle ground. You are trying to "spice" things up in an easy way. The oatmeal and knorrs crowd already have their way. We are going to be boring and we can't be helped.

When the packets are convoluted I mostly do it by sight on a flexible cutting board. Siving appear to be too much work
