I happened on this one this last summer climbing out of Turks Gap in SNP. It was the first time I came across a bear that it didn't immediately bolt into the forest when it saw me. It was snacking off the forest floor, grunted a few times, but just kept snacking. About the time I squeezed off a third shot, the hair on it's neck got up, and I took that as my cue to back away slowly, talking nicely with my arms up ....-

Probably pretty close. I was already amazed by how so many animals in SNP had no fear of humans, but this blew me away.-

My last day in the VA woods before moving, deer season was over and I was squirrel hunting with a .22, I'd been up and down a holler and killed a few squirrels, stepped out into a field and was looking down at the ground for deer signs, looked up and about 30 yds away was the biggest thing I've ever seen in the woods, beautiful bear, he saw me about the same time I saw him, he stood up and looked at me, then went to all fours, took off and ran over trees that would make a 2x4...I would say how much I thought he weighed but I would be called a liar.I may grow old but I'll never grow up.

I don't often pose for Jane Austin book covers, but when I do, I'm shirtless and flexing my freshly waxed pecs!-

Sorry, I'm just jealous of the hair and off topic. As for bears talking, the only time one spoke to me was in a very large blueberry patch in the rain. I was picking and something brushed me from behind. I looked and a bear was picking on the other side of the row. He turned his head, said "errh", and when back to picking, which to my surprise was exactly the same way I was picking. You gently strip each branch directly into your mouth. This was not the first time it has seemed to me that bears might be more civilized than humans. Anyway I think errh is bear for "excuse me".
