I actually read the book when it had come out, a GF of mine had given it to me as a gift so I read it. It wasn't a bad book...but she just really annoyed me. I don't know what it was or why, but she really really annoyed me! But back to her pack, the story I believe takes place in the early 90's, and she hits an REI and is sold practically everything except the Brooklyn Bridge. She takes extensive photography equipment and other things.RIAP -

wild is only opening in a few cities today. next friday is when most of the country gets it.
i'm glad i'm not chomping at the bit to see this thing or i'd really be annoyed. first, the highly trumpeted release date of 12/5 was like 5 theaters in 3 cities. the 12/12 list i saw may be technically correct -- but in atlanta 2 only theaters have it for now and i'm not driving 30 miles to downtown atlanta to see a movie (except for the plaza which is the only theater in town to show many independent and other low releases). so it looks like the "real date" for most to see it is mid january.
i just want to see the hiking and see how accurate or inaccurate it is. i have no interest in the authors personal journal of discovery and i wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be akin to something you'd see on the lifetime channel. most of the reviewers seem to love it which means i'll probably hate it. most of the reviewers hated dumb and dumber to and we all know how great that was.2,000 milerThe post was edited 2 times, last by max.patch ().

Prior to reading the book I expected a more detailed account of her hike. However the book was more of a diary of feelings and reaction to experiences.
i attended a talk by her and was left with the same thought.

Since the thread is Friday night movie, I'm going to see Imitation Game this evening.
Saw Wild on Wednesday. I'd really like someone who is familiar with hiking the PCT in the mid 90's to chime in if there really were so few people on the trail.
Responses to some comments above:
yes, Cheryl Strayed is in the first minute briefly when she drops Reese off at the motel she stayed at prior to starting the trail. She has one line, basically Good luck, have fun.
Looked like she came straight from REI as she started putting things into her brand new stuff sacks. Her pack and attached appendages were almost unbelievable until I forced myself to remember that she hiked in '95 and lightweight was not yet a thing. Also, the fact that she went to REI. I went to REI in 2008 before my first backpacking trip and asked for someone who had backpacked and knew the gear and what would be appropriate. They still sold me a few things that I've not used since except for car camping due to inappropriate for backpacking.
In other threads people have mentioned the lack of PCT scenery. I thought there was a fair amount and wasn't disappointed with this aspect. I was disappointed with the lack of interaction with others on the trail and development of trail relationships. But that wasn't the focus of the film. Like someone said above it was her reactions and feelings about past and current events in her life. It helped me understand why she descended into drug use and promiscuity. -

Well the cozy is finished. I ran two tests, one with just water. If you do not open the cozy it lasts 180° after 45 minutes, down from 212°. Once you open once or twice, all is lost.
For those of you who burn and cannot cook read on.
Once you add say some pasta. 20 minutes in a cozy is al'dente. 25 may be better when its pasta. But its cold I say after 25.
If you heat it up -Ti burns, so beware. Once it does the carbon even in small amounts ruins the meal.

Depends on the size of the pasta. Look for tiny pasta shapes, that the box says cook in 7-8 minutes. If the water starts out boiling furiously, 15 minutes in a cozy should do it nicely. Pastina and couscous might be even faster. If you get big noodles that the box says 14-17 minutes, forget it.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -

Between shovelin' duty today, I'm makin' a mole' with pacillos, mulatos, anchos, raisins, sunflower seed (cause I don't pumkin) sessame treats (cause i'm all outta sessamee seeds) not sure about this last one, and will add towards end of cooking so as not to burn the sugar and make it bitter) any thoughts on this last one all you chefs. and about 15-20 other things...just wingin' it basically.
