What will your next pack be?

I remember the day my zipper split open on my overloaded Jansport. I was losing gear while walking down the trail and had to go back to retrieve it all.

Its t's just another item to fail on the trail. I like the idea of the arc zip but I will forego the extra zippers for now. When I need to replace my arc blast I'll go with the same setup with no zippers.

An ULer might have just celebrated their pack getting lighter, and just kept walking.

I think I reached the point were I might just try to sew my own backpack. *Only packs I ever like are the REI flash packs, $99 for last year models.
Beat dishing out $250+ for a pack that falls apart at the same rate as others.

Mine got so much lighter, and lower volume, I was able to adopt a cubean fiber wallet into my Pant's Pocket System

I will say we keep things like the med-kit where we can grab it out of the front fast if we need it. I wonder if we frankly forget that the front opens or it's just the way we load them. If it's going to rain we also wrap the inside of the bag with a trash compactor bag so that rules out the front use anyhow. Great feature if you remember it has it.

(also the Osprey's and I think the Gregory's have compression straps that go across the front so even if the zipper failed for some reason your gear should stay in).

UPS delivered my next pack today, a Gregory Baltoro 75, size medium.
The story starts late in 2013 when I bought the same pack, but in a size large.
I wanted a high volume, comfortable, pack to use in winter time when I some times am carrying 3 sleeping bags.
Research lead me to the Baltoro 75 and so I went to my local outdoor stores to see it in person.
In one of those stores a young man measured my back using a special tool made by Gregory and it said I needed a size large, just barely. So seeing the pack and trying it on with some sand bags it seemed good. Fast forward to the pack's first hiking trip and I realized the size large was just a little too long to be comfortable. I used it for the rest of 2013 and 2014 but just couldn't stick with it anymore. So When I checked the REI web site I saw that they had some 2014 Baltoro 75s at last years price and pulled the trigger.
I'll be announcing the size large as being for sale as soon as I take some photos of it.

I finally gave the pack a test.
I loaded up 25 pounds of water bottles into the pack and we went for a short hike today, on the Plainview Loop.
It's a comfortable pack to begin with, but so much more so when you have the correct size.
I'm glad I spent the money to get a pack that fits properly as I can feel the difference.

I'll think about that once I get up to double digits on hiking trips. By that time the pack will be dry-rotted or moth-eaten, or there'll be anti-gravity packs to make everything ubermegaultrasuperduper light.

Haven't looked at packs since 2007. Happy with my two Granite Gear Packs, and they show no signs of falling apart.

I am maybe in the market for new poles and new boots. Present poles are 12 yrs old and got bent a bit too far on that LT hike.

I got my Circuit on Massdrop.

Let me know if they put the Circuits there again. Seriously considering dropping down from a Catalyst to a Circuit and Jet Boil Flash to Flash Lite to try to shave nearly a pound before next summer. I know I am going to add a little more weight for warmer clothes as I go further north. But have reduced my tent and sleeping bag weight/volume (and some other things) since I first bought the Catalyst a few years back.

I finally finished re-making my old MYOG pack. The original mesh was some non stretching type and had pulled loose a couple of years ago so I had turned the pack inside out and re-stitched down the sides, but in doing so I made the sides too narrow. Frustrated I sat the pack aside and bought my SMD Starlite which I like, but for me there's something about making my own stuff.

So after I made my new net tent with some 2.2 sil/pu nylon I decided it was too heavy, but the 2.2 would make great backpack material. So out came the scissors and I cut off the bathtub and sewed in a new bathtub with some 2nd generation 1.1 sil/pu nylon from Ripstop By the Roll-really nice stuff and not slippery.

One project down I tackled the next. I spent about an hour every night for a week with my seam ripper ripping my backpack apart. My plan was to just replace the sides and sides mesh. Well after I got the sides off I said it be a shame not to replace the front mesh pocket with this nice stretching mesh I got from Zpacks- so I kept ripping. Then I decided what the heck I might as well replace the whole front panel and the roll top. Funny how things snowball on you sometimes.

The "new" pack with aluminum hoop frame and sit pad back cushion weighs 23 oz. Since it is all black I call it my Stealthpack. Here's some after pictures. Hip belt pockets were from Gossamear Gear.
