My phone lets you turn GPS back on in airplane mode. Getting time from the network isn't expensive, and if GPS is on, the phone gets time from that, too. Telling the network where to find the phone is what eats power, and that will happen whenever the phone hears a ping from a tower, even if the tower is too far away for the phone to reach it. That scenario, deep fringe cell service, is what really kills the battery. Keep in in airplane mode.

Spelunk through Settings and turn off everything that you're not using: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and so on. Fire up the GPS when you're still in town so that the phone can get the WAAS data while talking to the network is cheap. Use a GPS app (I use BackCountry Navigator) that can download maps in advance and save them to the phone, and do so.

Also, keep the screen as dim as you can read (the backlight is power hungry) and keep the phone in standby as much as you can. For instance, wear a wristwatch, ideally one with an altimeter so you won't be tempted to fire up the phone to check your progress up that long grade. An altimeter plus a paper contour map or elevation profile are all you need until and unless you actually need to navigate. You can review the pretty line of your progress when you stop for lunch or to camp, you don't have to stare at it during the day.

I can't recommend how to save power if you use the phone as a music player. I'm not one of those people that needs recorded music going in the ears as I hike. But in general, a wired headset takes a lot less power than a Bluetooth one.

I carry a MintyBoost battery charger and several sets of lithium AA batteries (which also fit my camera) so that in a pinch I can recharge on the trail. I find that one set won't fully charge the phone but will get me about a day and a half of hiking. On a 4-day, 3-night trip I'll go through the phone battery plus one pair of AA's, and that's with the GPS running whenever I'm on the move, and maybe spending a half hour or so reading at night.

Keep the phone in the sleeping bag with you. Powered off entirely. A cold battery loses power faster than a warm one.

Backcountry Navigator gives you the numbers in a window that pulls up from the bottom of the screen. Beware of maps with decorative grids. (Some maps of mine, I've scribed multiple ways - UTM/MGRS grids, magnetic north/south lines, and ranges/bearings/time hacks from bushwhacks.)

Are you using an iphone? Mine is bizarre...doesn't capitalize the first letter of the first sentence and sometimes there are buttons missing and I can't "like" posts, upload photos, etc.

eye6.................i just discovered I had a dozen things open.............I had no clue.

Here and now, I would like to fess up to Kevin.

On my walk yesterday......... ..........I looked at my eye-gadget map with the little blue dot that tells you where you are!

I was testing it, and me......I had long site lines and a straight easy course and I would look at my map and the landscape...give a guess, and then look at the blue dot.

Ya know, if this whole cell phone craze lasts, maybe I'll get one someday.
