orienteerer
Indeed, orienteering builds navigational and in-woods movement skills and (probably more importantly) confidence. It's a fun game, too ... the balance between running fast(ish) and navigating well is a life long dance.
The downside with the 'sport' side of orienteering (where I squarely fall) is I often miss the forest for the game. This is a challenge for me when trail running and even hiking: I'm a mile chewer.

Welcome to the nut house.
I have often considered orienteering but not for long. In my youth I spent a lot of time in the passenger seat of rally cars hurtling through the forest, telling the driver where to go from 1 to 50,000 scale maps. The map reading I enjoyed. But the stopper for me as I got into hiking is a life long aversion to running.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -
You don't have to do it at a run.
Plenty of people do it at a walking pace just to see if they can find all the controls.
And there's different levels of competition too.
The local club here on Long Island even has a canoe orienteering meet once a year on a local river. -

Fall's here, which means thinking about (pining for?) next year's adventures (Fall is booked solid with less fun things ). Thought I'd join up here and keep the planning going and excitement high.
I'm mostly an orienteerer and trail runner, but my girls will soon be old enough to join me on the trail. So, a different pace and set of missions are important to continue fostering their budding outdoorsy selves, while maintaining a high level of fun for all.
I love what I've read so far! Good topics, good diversions, good crew. I look forward to learning and contributing.
Welcome, again. We love maps and there's a compass thread around here somewhere.Lost in the right direction. -

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -

Under the forum "Selling Used Gear" click "Post New Thread"
That should bring up a window with all the 'Advanced" posting options.
Above the dialog box you see all the formatting icons.
On the second row of icons, in the forth subgroup, third icon over is the icon for inserting an image in the body of your post.
It looks like a framed picture of a tree. Click that..“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,
