i day hiked the 4 mile indian seats trail in the sawnee mountain preserve on the way home from a trip to north georgia. this is located just a short jog off of ga 400.
from the parking lot there is about 500 foot of steady elevation gain as you reach the summit of sawnee mountain. the sawnee indians used to sit on the granite rocks at the summit; hence the name indian seats trail. there is also an observation deck on the summit with great views of the valley below and the southern appalachians in the distance. a metal map points out the mountains in the distance, including springer and hawk mountains.
along the trail you pass a couple of old gold mines.
i took a few pictures, but keeping my reputation as a lousy photographer intact none of them came out. i've pulled a few pictures from the web of the shots i attempted to take.
no dogs or smoking (never saw that before) allowed.
