I love the Garcia/Grisman sessions. Had not heard these before. I have their Shady Grove album. It is a treasure trove of potential hiking songs: Shady Grove, The Sweet Sunny South, Dreadful Wind and Rain, Whiskey in the Jar, Down in the Valley, Handsome Cabin Boy.
But my favorite outdoorsy song is Nanci Griffith's Across the Great Divide.

I find myself singing this one when out in the woods. I usually use one of Woody's variants of the original 4th verse:
As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.
-
And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!"
Whoa-oh-oh
Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?
And the sign said anybody caught trespassin' would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right?"
"To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in"
"If God was here he'd tell you to your face, Man, you're some kinda sinner"
Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?
Now, hey you, mister, can't you read?
You've got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat
You can't even watch, no you can't eat
You ain't supposed to be here
The sign said you got to have a membership card to get inside
Ugh!
[Lead Guitar]
And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down and pray"
But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn't have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine."
Wooo!
Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?
Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Sign
Sign, signI may grow old but I'll never grow up. -

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

This guys's family also runs the restaurant Gypsy Joynt in Great Barrington MA, which is a great stop if you're in the area.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -

Not my favorite - but it was going through my head when I was out hiking earlier in the week:
I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -

ah hell, we're all friends here so I might as well give away a trade secret; when you want to see the format necessary to do anything like that, copy and then look in your own reply box at the copied text (before you hit submit). It will show you the format and not the result of the format while it's in the reply box.If your Doctor is a tree, you're on acid. -

There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane? -
