In all of New York the Breakneck Ridge Trail is the best hike?
It's nice, no doubt, but the best the state has to offer, I don't know about that.

a bit of hyperbole about georgia.
neels gap to the top of blood is THE most hiked section of the a.t. in georgia. on sunday afternoons you'll see people who have come directly from church without changing except for maybe a pair of shoes they threw in the car. at least one gentleman will still be wearing a tie.2,000 miler -
Breakneck Ridge is surely nice - challenging scrambles and good views. But for scrambles and views, it can't hold a candle to the eastern half of the Devil's Path over Indian Head, Twin, Sugarloaf and Plateau Mountains.
I really, really like the trail through Avalanche Pass, from Marcy Dam down to Lake Colden. The scenery there is astonishing.

(NOT MY PICTURE)
One of these years, I'll work up the nerve to put on approach shoes and leave Avalanche Lake by the Trap Dyke up to the summit of Mount Colden. Or maybe sanity will prevail and I won't.
The first three minutes of this video gives an idea of the scenery on-trail in the pass. From about 4:15 on, it shows the scramble up the Trap Dyke.

And I haven't even mentioned the Great Range traverse - because I haven't done it yet. That one's on the list. Probably in 2016, I have too many other hiking plans this summer to take it on. (And I'm nowhere near enough of a hiker to do it in one day, the way some manage.) Think Presidential Range, but without the Mount Washington tourists.

Lived in Arkansas last 12 years and hiked 100s of miles here in the last few years and I had never heard of the Lost Valley Trail. I guess I need to get out there sometime. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

What is the criteria for judgement? I kinda view articles like this the same as "The best gear" ones. Even seasons change things: Roan Mt in Bloom as opposed to eaely season hike. Or hiking in berry season, than can sure change your idea of a trail. I didn't get vey far on the list. Seemed like more of a click counter thn serious.

In the states I'm familiar with, this is pathetic. Tubbs Hill in Idaho is a nice walk in a city park. There are numerous day hikes to alpine lakes and peaks. Washington ha the North Cascades and Mt Rainier, and the Olympic coast. New York, others have covered.

Their one for Illinois is dead on. A nice hike in a city park. That's all the hiking there is in [expletive deleted] Illinois. That's why I took up cycling when I lived there, and I don't think I've been on two wheels since. (It didn't help that my bike had a flatlander's gearing.)I'm not lost. I know where I am. AK, I love the dancing video, thanks for posting it.Lost in the right direction.

I think I'll hike to Alum Cave if the parking lot isn't too full. It's been a few years since I've been there but I don't remember it being the best hike in TN.Lost in the right direction.

as far as day hikes in ny id say the old minnewaska trail in the gunks
Oh, well, I guess we knew that all the pitch pines on the US 209 side of the ridge were going to go up eventually. Pitch pines always do that sooner or later. The Long Path south of Ellenville is going to have more viewpoints for the next few years.
Hey, Elf, if you're reading this, this started from a homeowner burning brush by US 209, maybe five miles south of the diner we ate at after doing that bushwhack loop.
There are also about 100-150 acres burnt on the back side of Hunter, started inadvertently by a utility crew dropping a tree branch on the power line alongside NY 214. I've bushwhacked to the southwest summit of Hunter, on an easier route than up from 214, and I can only imagine what fighting a fire in that terrain must be like. It's hard enough just hiking in it!
Fortunately, there, they managed to strike a line below the stand of firs that covers the summit. That's a real tinderbox. It's still full of tangled blowdown from Irene, as if fir trees aren't inflammable enough. Get a fire going up there, and everything above about 3500 feet will be up in smoke.I'm not lost. Finally looked at the article. So, the West Virginia trail isn't even in West Virginia.

I forgot Alum Cave trail is closed during the week for maintenance so had to hike a different trail.Lost in the right direction.

Out of the whole, entire, giant state of Alaska, their article says the best one is a tourist hot spot in Anchorage? Don't get me wrong, Flat Top is everything they said and more with the gorgeous views of the Anchorage bowl, Turnagain Arm, etc below but it's not on my top ten list. Granted, I haven't been up here for very long and if I lived here the rest of my life would probably still not be able to cover even most of the state or be considered anything near and authority but still, my opinion is meh.“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” - T. A trail that loops around a bunch of ponds in a state recreation area outside of Ann Arbor is the best hiking in MI??? Yea right. Plus it is rated as strenuous. Interesting that Arizona is the only western state that has a trail on the list rated as strenuous. I guess I need to get out west were the hiking is so easy. I didn't know hiking around flat lakes in Michigan was ssoooooo difficult. And the link they provide about the MI trail says it is 17.5 miles and takes 2.5 hrs to hike. Maybe it's that 7 mph speed limit that makes it strenuous.

y'all realize, of course, that the list was put together by a consensus of the top 10 posters at whiteblaze don't cha?
blood mountain may not be the "best" hiking trail in ga, but it is "most" hiked trail in ga. for many people it is the only hiking they may do all year. park at byron reese, walk up to summit, sit on the rock, turn around and go home. if you go on a sunday afternoon you'll see people who have come right after church, with the occasional guy still wearing his tie and white shirt. it probably is "extremely strenuous" to quite a few people.
the "experts only" is a bit of overkill, though.2,000 miler
