I got caught nearly 40 years ago on a hike in the Whites by an Arctic air mass arriving two days ahead of the forecast. It was below -40 on the thermometer when the party turned around, and a mite breezy. So yeah, the guys in the group were emitting yellow snow when they had to adjust the fluid levels. It was an all-male group of earthy hiker-trash college students, so it was like, "Hey, Kevin, look what happens when you [urinate] in this weather!" along with increasingly ribald and improbable suggestions of possibilities for further experimentation. (My fingers typed an 'i' for the 'o' in 'possibilities' the first time around - Freudian?)I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -

In winter of 2007 my wife and I went to northern Minnesota for a 4 day dogsled camping trip. Woke up the first morning to -25 below zero and got to try the throw the water up in the air trick. I had never seen that before and was amazed. I don't think we'll have enough extra water during the group hike to throw it away.

I've been out at -35 and it's not as bad as you'd think as long as there's no wind. I entered an ice fishing contest at-19 and 25 mph wind....I was miserable.I may grow old but I'll never grow up. -
I'm still planning a hike on 18th and 19th to "be there in spirit" and to compare experiences post hike.
Frozen appendages not expected to be an issue for me.

Like Oz I will probably be hiking also, but in a closer and warmer location. Either more of the Ouachita Trail, or the Eagle Rock Loop.

Awesome! I'm waiting for my new harriman map set to come b4 I do any actual planning. I lent my old ones out and never got them back. If I hit the lottery lunch is on me ... or when we're done paying for college. One down ... one graduating in May and one in the middle of her first year. Few more years yet!

Anyone ever catch the bus at Bear Mountain?
I am thinking of doing that this summer to get to Amtrak to go home in August. Curious if the Coach USA station is near the zoo, or where exactly it is.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Once we figure out how many cars we have available, we'll work out how to distribute them across the park (my thinking: Tiorati, Anthony Wayne, maybe Silvermine) so that we have very short bailouts available or so that we can shuttle anyone who wants to come for only part of the trip. There will surely be no problem with getting people back to their cars, even if the shuttling might get complicated.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -
