PostIf you haven't bought it yet, let me know. I have a mini I am thinking about selling. Bought it for use shuttling at the the hostel & found it a bit cumbersome for several staff members. After a week or two I switched over to Zoleo unit.

Packing Time Line
Mountain-Mike - - Gear
PostQuote from Muddywaters: “I bring same stuff everytime so only thing i really need to give attention is starting food and resupplies. Rest i procrastinate on. When driving, Quite a few times i have just put all my gear needed in a cardboard box , with some alternate options. Then I actually decide what I'm going to bring and pack in the hotel the night before. Being able to procrastinate and leave stuff in the truck just makes it less likely for me to pack ahead of time Because of this somewhat h…

I did get to meet him while shuttling him while he stayed at Angel's Rest. It was both an honor & a pleasure. We amused the other hikers with our tales of hiking the AT 25+ years ago. How we had UL tents, they just weighed 5 lbs. back then. He has invited me down to Flagg Mt where he is a caretaker & told me I should hike the Pinhoti Trail.

Guide Books
Mountain-Mike - - Books
PostStill addicted to printed maps. Most hikers I deal with at the Hostel use guthook. Most of the ones I take out are reviewing the elevation profiles during the drive. A few still use a paper guide & even seen a few older people using paper maps. I do notice a high percentage of garmin minis hanging off peoples packs

Quote from LIhikers: “Thanks TJ, that was helpful. As Kathy and I head into retirement we have some long hikes and bicycle rides planned. While we mostly want the unit for it's SOS feature it would be nice if our sons could follow along with where we are. ” I will survey the hikers going thru the Hostel. From the looks the Mini is the most prevalent.

Why Overfill?
PostMy first Feathered friend sleeping bag was their Rock Wren. It had no side baffles so you could move the down from top to bottom to adjust temperature. The temp rating was not what I needed so I had them add some down. I recently replaced it with a newer version called their Winter Wren. Pretty much what I originally ordered with a better shell. So yes, I believe in adding fill to some items.

Quote from Traffic Jam: “I’ve been using a Trail Designs titanium caldera cone and really like it. With the cone I can use an alcohol stove, a wood burning insert, or a solid fuel (esbit) stove. Having the ability to cook with different fuel-burning options is great because it never fails that something goes wrong and I need a back up. While hiking the Standing Indian Loop, I used the esbit stove for the first time. It worked great but left such a mess. I didn’t realize that gunk was smeared on …

Quote from IMScotty: “Have you thought about your hiking plans for 2021? I am growing increasingly concerned that I will be forced to chose between my desire to take a walk, and the official guidance of the ATC and PCT. While I understood and supported their request that long-distance hikes be terminated and postponed in 2020, I fear this stance will remain in place for some time to come. At the start of 2020 we did not fully understand the implications of this virus, we were not fully prepared …
