Quote from rhjanes: “Quote from LIhikers: “Today is gonna be a zero because of the rain. I guess I prove Matt-C's point. ” I checked Matt-C's YouTube. He's got a recent post about someone. It's talking about that dog that has been posted as missing on the AT, in Facebook 2024 hiker groups. ” Knucklehead Angry Guy is ranting about Ramdino, who's kind of become the news reporter for the AT on YouTube. And once again showing how little he knows about the AT. He also reiterated his vast experience i…

Retirement has made me rethink my hiking plans for this year. I was hoping to do the Idaho Centennial Trail this summer, but I started thinking I'm not really in shape to commit to 900 miles of wilderness, so I've come up with an alternate plan. I figured on doing the BMT as a warmup hike, but that wouldn't leave me much time to work out all of the logistics for the ICT with food drops, water carries, etc. So instead, after the BMT, I'll hop on the AT and hike north to NY. I'll then head home to…

Quote from LIhikers: “Yesterday's walk was in a place called Planting Fields Arboretum, it was only the 2nd time I've ever been there. It was the estate of a wealthy family from 1913 until 1955. As you might expect in an arboretum there were all sorts of gardens and green houses to go through. We hiked 4.1 miles on trails that went through the non-manicured woods. I think it took us about 2.5 hours as we stopped so Kathy could read the signs describing the trees, flowers, and plants. Along the w…

  • There's nothing wrong with buying used gear, as long as there's nothing wrong with the gear itself. You should always ask the seller why they're selling. Osprey makes a good pack. The Exos, Atmos and now the Levity are the more popular ones, with the Exos a preference of the 3 among thru hikers. Osprey has a great reputation for honoring its warranty. I don't think you'd have an issue returning it if there is something that's defective. Make sure the zippers are all working, and haven't separated…

  • Quote from Rasty: “@'hikerboy "Is one of those people". I don't know what that means but I fully support the statement. ” He must be referring to how I used my trust fund money to ruin the thru hiking experience for everyone.

I grew up in Flushing, and at the time we had a very mixed community, and one of my best friends was Chinese. But Main St Flushing went through a dramatic transformation in the '90s and is now predominantly Asian, a mix of Chinese and Korean. youtu.be/d_CaZ4EAexQ?si=KORCQFJ7-tli-f5S

  • Although I haven't hiked with kids, there was a woman last year who hiked the entire Appalachian Trail with her 10 kids last year. No reason you couldn't. Try to plan the hike so that you have a reward, like a waterfall, swimming hole, or beautiful viewpoint. And make sure they always stay within sight of you or your camp.Try also to plan it when the weather's good. Nobody enjoys hiking in the rain.

I thought you were calling him gorgeous, but it was actually the scenery you were referring to. ” So if the first president owned an attractive chasm, we could say: George's gorge is gorgeous. ” The George of Valley Forge?

Now it looks like I won't be using vacation days for my Maine section. Kind of a bummer, as the thought of getting paid while hiking got me up quite a few mountains. ” I just retired a few months ago, and I'm still getting used to the idea of not having to return from a trip at a certain time.

  • If you're getting most of your information from YouTube vloggers, you're not getting very good information. The vast majority of vloggers fail, most before they've gotten halfway. And the vast majority of thru hikers don't vlog. A few thousand people a year attempt a thru hike, and you've probably watched no more than a handful of vloggers. You should also know that the AT was never designed with thru hiking in mind and that the AMC huts predate the AT itself. Maybe read up on Myron Avery and Be…

  • You're very entertaining, but you do need to get out more. When you do, you'll find yourself sharing the trail with not just thru hikers, but section hikers and dayhikers as well. And how they hike really has no influence on your hike except making you angrier. If you want to do a good warm up, do the Benton Mackaye trail. all primitive campsites, no hostels, very few towns. 290 miles, and I've gone 3 to 4 days without seeing a single person. I can see you really don't have the mental mindset to …

  • Do yourself a favor and go hike a bit.

  • Quote from IMScotty: “HB, Did my parents send you my Trust Fund by mistake? I can't seem to find mine. ” Yeah, that was pretty funny. There's some real interesting judgements going on from someone who doesn't get out enough.

  • You're very angry, for no reason. There are plenty of long distance trails you can hike if you want a more pure experience. But the AT is what it is. Hostels have been around for decades, it's not something new. And most thru hikers do NOT hostel hop. When you spend 5 or 6 months in the woods, believe it or not, a hot shower is a good idea once in a while. This whole nonsense about trust fund babies is even funnier. As I've said before, you are absolutely clueless as to what it takes to trhu hike…
