Today was cloudy and dreary. But the "bright" side was it was the first day in 23 days with no rain or snow.

Quote from IMScotty: “Nene, Big Island: The world's rarest goose and Hawaii's state bird. In 1952 there were only 30 Nene left in existence. Conservationists saved the birds from the brink of extinction, and today over 3000 Nene live in the wild. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…64b9f278665a9d0914a8e1a1c I asked Nolan what he wanted to do in Hawaii, and his answer was to see a Nene. We went on a birding safari and finally found our quarry in Volcano National Park. This is my favorite photo of the …

In Sunday's Lions game, Tampa Bay was down by 14 pts near the end of the game. They scored a TD with a few minutes to play. There has been much discussion of their decision to go for the 2 pt try rather than kick a PAT. I have seen people argue both sides, so I thought I would crunch the numbers (As I tend to do). The premise: You are down 14 points with a few minutes to play in regulation. The most likely positive outcome is to score a TD, get a defensive stop, and score another TD at the end o…

Quote from Sarcasmtheelf: “...While I'm not a believer in such things I will admit that it felt like a very, very weird place when I hiked through it some years ago... ” I too don't buy into most of this lore either. The only place I've ever been to that weirded me out in an unnatural way was an old cemetery in Skagway AK where they buried a lot of the people who died during the Yukon Gold Rush. I've been to lots of old cemeteries (often related to my wife's family history research), some with t…

We have had 3.7% of possible sunshine this month. This we have lots of plows.

In the supposedly frigid north, we are at a relatively balmy 8 degrees this morning. So many people underestimate the moderating effects of the Great Lakes.

Quote from Astro: “I went up Hunt and down Abol. Personally would not want to go down down Hunt. ” I've heard that. Is that due to more scrambling on Hunt vs Abol? Scrambling up is easier. That's why I did the GC Hermit Loop counter clockwise. Do you road walk back to KS campground from the Abol Trailhead or camp at Abol?

I've never been on the Abol trail so can't comment on that. ” Good to know. if the weather is good I would camp the night before to get an early start, I think.

I have been revisiting my idea of a BSP/HMW hike in late July/early August. I had a Q about permits. The BSP web page says all AT hikers must get a permit in-person at the KS Campground and once the quota for the year has been used up, hikers must follow the same procedures as the general public. It says hikers self-declare as thru hikers (NOBO, SOBO, or Flip Flop), or section hikers. This is confusing since SOBO hikers (thru or section) have to follow the same procedures as the general public a…

My first hike in VA was 5 days from Big Stony Creek Road (VA 635) NOBO to US 220 at Daleville (71.2 miles). This is a great section and includes the so-called VA Triple Crown (Dragon's Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs). However it turned put to be a bit too ambitious as my knee gave out on day 3, exacerbated no doubt by a pack that was too heavy. I was at least able to make it over Dragon's Tooth and stopped at 4 Pines Hostel (be sure to have an "open mind" before stopping), had my shuttle …

I had worked for months to get my long term average on Global down to 5 guesses. But then on Jan 1, my average mysteriously shot up to 5.5, so I'm thinking the new year somehow messed up their score calculation algorithm. So I reset it. Now my short term (one day) average is now 5 guesses. globle-game.com/
