Clarity on an AT thru-hike
OzJacko - - Trip Report
PostAs a LASHer I don't have one of those. If I did it would probably sit in a box like my Bibbulmun certificate and my Camino Compestela. The 80 mile Cape to Cape certificate in joint names with Annie is on display. I consider that my photos at all the "key" points of the AT show I hiked it. I congratulate all who hike the trail. I don't consider the certificate proves any did it better than me as I know many with a certificate who didn't. Your journey is your journey. It doesn't need to be judged …

Meanwhile in Australia..... Here on the south coast I am experiencing most days with minimums around 15 Celsius and maximums around 25 to 30 Celsius. I did get a spike on Monday of 41 Celsius but 30 and high 20's either side. Perth on the other hand has had minimums around my maximums and has had well over a week over the 100 Fahrenheit mark. They are expectinga cool change today - only 36Celsius (about 98).

Planning the AT
OzJacko - - AT Specific
PostI saw too many hikes ruined or cut short for budget issues. There are many ways to do it cutting as much cost as possible but most impact on the experience. For a budget hike the main key is to avoid towns. This is VERY hard. I seriously recommend a half AT for someone with a seriously tight budget. And I would recommend starting in Damascus Virginia the week before Trail Days. You avoid the expense of Trail Days, are sort of in a quiet bit of the "bubble" for a few days while you get your legs.…

Planning the AT
OzJacko - - AT Specific
PostQuote from xDUMBOx: “Hello all, I am brand new to this forum.. But glad I made my way here. I've dreamt of walking the AT for quiet some time now. But I've never really done any long distance (months hiking) before. So I am novice to the living on the trail. So my questions to you would be advice, what I'll need, how to prepare and what to know about the AT and accomplishing it. I truly appreciate all the advice a head of time and will take all criticism and advice. ” A couple of points that I h…

Trail Names
PostQuote from Da Wolf: “Quote from TrafficJam: “Do you have more than one? Has anyone ever recognized you on the trail based on your name? If so, does that make you feel uncomfortable? ” my first trail name was Yankee Slackpacker then i switched to Lone Wolf. in town everyone knows me as Wolf. ” That's because everyone knows that you would have the whole world speak in as few syllables as possible if you could.

Trail Names
PostI like them. Like Socks I think of them more as nicknames. It's more for thru hikers or dedicated section hikers to my way of thinking. Jacko was my nickname as a young man when involved in motorsport (our club already had a much older Jack). It became my preferred name in "leisure hours". It was taken when I joined TOS so I put Oz in front. Most of my cafe friends call me Oz when we meet. Army Ant and Rolling R call me Jacko. I call them Army (or Matthew) and Domenik. Rolling R doesn't roll off…

Etiquette
PostStaring is poor form. As stated giggling is not helpful. For both sexes I would say the same applies. It's a bodily function. If further off the trail options were available then he/she is at fault for not taking them. Just be aware that the older the man the longer it takes....
