First let me clarify - I am NOT second guessing or Monday morning quaterbacking why and what happened in this tragic case. I'm personally a firm believer of carrying a map and compass even on well marked trails, such as the AT, just to prevent a scenario like this from occurring. When I guide I always show my clients where I carry my map, GPS and compass and give them a quick lesson of how to find their way back to either the horses or trail by using the map and compass. Thankfully I have noever…

Quote from EdDzierzak: “NORML (national organization to reform MJ law) (I think) ” Off original topic but a quote from NORML's webpage Their web Criminal marijuana prohibition is a failure. Over 20 million Americans have been arrested for marijuana offenses since 1965. NORML believes that the time has come to amend criminal prohibition and replace it with a system of legalization, taxation, regulation, and education. I am not a smoker myself (weed or cigarettes) but in all the years of being LEO…

PostI have an old (I mean old like before you could get maps for them) Garmin GPS and I use UTM for all of my map work when I guide. I also bought an acetate overlay with the map scale I use. Sitting home I can review a topo of the area I want to hunt. When I see an feature I find interesting I can just drop the overlay on the map – get the exact UTM coordinates and enter them into the GPS. Once I am actually out in the woods I will get a bearing & distance reading from the GPS then use my compass t…

Springer fatality?
PostMy ex was a nurse and they had a guy come into the hospital that tried it with a shotgun in the mouth. He blew his face off but survived. After much counseling the guy received reconstructive plastic surgery. Unfortunately the guy didn't learn from his first experience because he did the shotgun trick again and initially survived it again. This time they didn't bother with the counseling or surgery. Being a LEO for many years you find out the hanging and self inflicted gun shot wounds are the mo…

Not sure if anyone else has seen this or if this is the correct thread to post this but since it is powdered ...... I tried this plain and thought it was pretty good. My plan is to mix it with some hot sauce to a make sauce to use over Ramen noodles in freezer bag cooking. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…a74693d2e26e1efd2c88ae368

Bear Food
PostQuote from JimBlue: “the deer is checking you for salt content. Beware of salt hunting carnivorous deer. ” Where I guide up in the Beartooth Mountains the deer are so mineral deprived they will dig/eat the dirt where you urinate. I have had them stand and watch me urinate and once I am done they will go over and start licking the ground.

PostMy first encounter with that deer was when I had dropped off on a side trail to get water. I spotted it and stopped to take a picture. Once the deer spotted me it didn't run off. Instead it walked up to me and sniffed my legs. I went and got my water then back tracked about 1/2 mile on the AT to a camp spot I had found. Was setting up the tent when the deer arrived and hung around. Finally I had to chase it off cause it kept trying to walk over the tent.

LI I fully understand how you feel. I work for a fertilizer company and this is the busy season. We average between 85 - 100 hrs a week. A day of rain or extreme wind is our chance for a day off LIhikers wrote: Quote from LIhikers: “It's grey, or is it gray, and rainy here on Long Island and should be a perfect day to take a nap. I haven't read every post in this thread so this may have already been covered. I happen to like spaghetti and bring it when I hike. To make my “sauce” I use tomato paste, not tomato sauce. I will add whatever seasoning strikes my fancy and then dehydrate the tomato paste until it is dry and brittle. Once it is brittle I break it up and put it in my magic bullet and turn it into powder. For the pasta I cook it following directions. Once it is fully cooked I then dehydrate it. The sauce is packag…
