Jumping on AT July 5
PostQuote from Sole2Soul: “Folks I completed my first 31+ miles of the AT on July 7. Started at the Springer parking lot at USFS 42. Hiked 14.5 miles day 1 and spent the night at Justus Creek. Absolutely beautiful! I did not feel in jeopardy of being short water this 1st day, in fact I over carried. Got rained on for an hour or so but then it let up and I dried out. Day 2 I left Justus for Lance Creek. There was less water in this 10 miles. I still overcarried. Spent the night at Lance Creek. Tent p…

PostNever being into selfies before my hike, hiking the AT solo meant that I had to learn real quick. Without a selfie stick. Somehow I managed some decent pics. The not even stopping to breathe in the view is the sad part of that story.

Jumping on AT July 5
PostQuote from odd man out: “btw, I might suggest walking rather than jumping ” I don't know, jumping might get you there quicker. There's a helluva lot of evidence that skipping is good for the body and uplifts the spirit. Holy hell, it's most definitely a workout. I do suggest skipping your way across a flat piece of trail a time or two. You'll find yourself out of breath with the biggest smile on your face!

In the spirit of nostalgia, when I first joined here, I had never even spent a single night camping out in the woods. Wow. Ain't life grand?

Hey y'all. My journey uncovering clarity continues. Life is about to get the good kind of busy! I'm thrilled about getting a full-time job in the Cooperative Extension Department of the University of Georgia surrounded by incredible mentors and unlimited possibilities! Simultaneously, my writing is taking off and I'm currently working on 2 freelance articles for magazine publications. Top that off with the most awesome part-time job at Southern Brewing Company on weekends, and that, y'all, defin…

Jumping on AT July 5
PostThere's always a dry stretch after Hawk Mt Shelter, so be sure to fill up there. It's a solid 7 miles without water. Otherwise, you should be fine. Be sure you look ahead and plan using your trail guide. AWOL and Guthooks are best. Cheers! Happy trailS!

welcome to the cafe
PostQuote from TrafficJam: “Quote from OzJacko: “I have to say that of late I have been disappointed with the way the cafe has been going. The departure of Hikerboy saddened me although unlike him the reduction in political content actually pleased me. However without him what political content remains is slanted in a way I find offensive after some 40 years of employment in the welfare sector of my wife and myself. To hear comments indicating that your country's economic woes are because of welfare…

Springer fatality?
PostQuote from sheepdog: “My dads best friend was a state trooper. He told us this story. He got called on a suicide and he had been a troop for almost a year. The wife met him at the door and said her husband had shot himself with a shotgun in the mouth. He looked in the living room and sure enough there he was in all his gory glory. About that time the guy stands up and starts walking towards him groaning like a zombie. He said it scared him so bad he almost shot him. ” Omg, how creepy!

Springer fatality?
PostQuote from Dan76: “Quote from Trebor: “Quote from sheepdog: “The last suicide attempt on shift for me was last month. 25 year old druggie about 6' 2", 180 lbs. was cutting his wrists with a metal plate he had pried off the wall. I said come on man lets get you fixed up. Then the fight was on. We are a small jail with 2 co's on shift. My partner was watching on camera and called for road help. By the time help got there I had him in cuffs but I was covered in drug addict blood. ” Mine was last we…

Springer fatality?
PostQuote from mental note: “surprised no one on TOS asked if she used the PCT method. What a way to die. ” Seriously. Quote from Trebor: “Quote from sheepdog: “Quote from LIhikers: “Years ago I was almost arrested at a park in New Jersey, but that's another story. During the ensuing conversation with the park Ranger I learned that many people go to parks to commit suicide. Seems it's a hazard of the job of a Park Ranger, finding the victims after they've been successful. No matter which this was, i…

Quote from Astro: “I wish I had walked faster and maybe I would have met him last year. But then again maybe I would not have met some of the other neat people that I did. ” I absolutely love that last part. Things happen the way they're supposed to. On my hike I learned how to look on my painful divorce as a reason I have certain new people in my life...and new experiences I never would have known.

He was quite a sport...took me on a "date" to dinner at his neighbors' house...a found a SOBO thru-hiker there who went with too. It was such a fun evening! And yes, he was in Lyme Center, NH, just after crossing into NH. He had a doctorate degree in psychoanalysis and taught at Harvard but was so down to Earth with hikers.
