Hiking & Biking
Traffic Jam - - General
PostI rode an easy’ish 10.5 miles last week without any foot pain. It was great but I’m not where I should be for the July, C&O Canal trip so have decided to cancel. It’s a relief to not have the pressure of getting ready and to focus more on hiking.

PostWeek before last I camped in VA with family and did some short hikes. My granddaughter’s, 2 & 4, were a lot of fun. It was the 2 yr old’s first trip. We hiked the Humpback Rocks overlook trail but turned around before reaching the top because it got too difficult for me to hold onto the 2 yr old and navigate the steep rocky trail…they did great though! They are really into flowers and rocks and were constantly giving me things to put into my pockets. Occasionally I had to furtively clean out my …

I’m sorry you weren’t able to finish your hike but it still sounds great. Maybe you can plan some long sections, you have a good start.

PostQuote from Trillium: “Haven't been able to get out on any trails but I'm working part-time at the golf course at one of the entrances to the subdivision so now that spring has finally sprung, I've been walking to work several days this week and last. The flowering trees are so beautiful. I've decided I'd like a pink dogwood to replace the pine tree at the corner of the house that grew way too tall and my husband had cut down. ” Sounds like the perfect job!

Quote from odd man out: “We got to the Blue Ridge Music Center for the noon jam session. A few songs in they asked if there was a bass player in the audience. I stepped up. It went well. It's fun playing songs you don't know by just listening to them once. On the way to Raleigh we stopped at Pilot Mountain to see the overlooks.appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/15271/appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/15272/ ” How fun! I’m glad you got to play. The beauty of bluegrass is it…

Quote from odd man out: “I don't know Andy Thorn. We've been listening to a CD by Molly Tuttle while driving to NC. Excellent Bluegrass album. We're spending the night at a B&B in Athens WV, not far from Bland VA. Tomorrow we are stopping at the Blue Ridge Music Center on the BRP near Galax VA. They have a jam session at noon, plus some trails to walk. I don't have an instrument to join in with so we'll just listen. ” Molly Tuttle is awesome. I follow her fiddle player Bronwyn Keith-Hynes. It’s …

Quote from jimmyjam: “instagram.com/_thornpipe_?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Anybody follow Andy Thorn aka thornpipe? He is an amazing banjo player. Makes me want to learn. ” I don’t follow him but have seen his video with the fox. Go for it! Learning to play an instrument is fun (and sometimes you want to tear out your hair, but it’s mostly fun.) I’m playing with several different groups in the area and it’s a great way to socialize with people my age.

PostTook another walk today, not quite 6 miles but close. There was more elevation change this time so it was a little more challenging. The flowers and the fragrance from the honeysuckle was delightful! I found a good spot to throw out a fly (is that even the right phrase?) with my Tenkara rod. I saw small fish and hoped to get a nibble. I know I wasn’t trout fishing, just wanted to cast a few times. My first cast landed in a bush on the bank, the second in the trees <sigh>. I finally just tossed t…

PostLast week I hiked on the East Lakeshore Trail and increased my mileage to 4.5. It was a gorgeous day and I had to get outside. My foot was uncomfortable towards the end but I think I’m ready to increase to 6 miles.

Health

PostQuote from jimmyjam: “My wife's health has continued to decline. She has early onset Alzheimer's. It's horrible. She was diagnosed with "white matter disease" in 2009 and officially Alzheimer's in December 2013. I can be a caretaker no longer. I am placing her in Memory Care in a few weeks. It's best for both of us. I will get back to living and hiking and everything else once she is adjusted to her new situation. ” I’m so sorry JJ but I’m happy you’ve found a solution for both of you.

PostGeez Louise, I made it to the next round in the sock knitting competition. I’m seriously ready to be finished (my poor, tired hands) but as soon as the competition pattern drops, I can’t stand not trying, it brings out my competitive spirit. The next round will definitely be my last…definitely!!! Between the competition patterns and bonus patterns, I’m working on pair #10.

PostQuote from LIhikers: “Since I can't ride right now, due to my foot problem, I've decided on a bicycle project. Kathy and I have an old tandem bike that we haven't used in years. We got it so we could ride with a blind friend, but she died years ago, and we haven't used it since. I plan to completely disassemble it, clean and inspect every part, strip the paint from the frame so I can inspect the frame, and then reassemble it with new parts where needed. It'll be fun to ride around together. ” So…

PostTechnically, I’m not released to ride my bike until May 1 in case of a fall but today I pumped up the tires and rode around the neighborhood and up some hills. The foot felt great but my legs didn’t like those hills.
