Heavy rain yesterday, I had settled into my hammock, lit up a good cigar and sipping on a glass of cognac, when the rain started the dogs joined me under the tarp, the dogo pup started playing with a 3 ft stick which I took and threw away to keep her from knocking my drink over as she did the day before, she went out into the rain, brought the stick back (good dog!) and stuck it into my hammock which ripped and sent me to the ground quick...had to finish my cigar sitting on the ground with the o…

PostQuote from IMScotty: “Nothing beats well seasoned cast iron OMO. Of course my old Griswold #8 frypan would be a wee bit heavy to hump into the backcountry. ” I ran across a large cast iron skillet sitting on a stump next to the trail (Pinhoti) in the middle of nowhere, someone got tires of carrying it...I let the free will offering stay on the stump.

youtube.com/watch?v=Y0PUJU99zE4 Different look, but this is the pad I used and was very happy with, good to 15* in a small tent, inflation bag works great, deflates quickly, rolls up easily, 16 ounces is what the scales read for mine.

I would be more concerned about quality of sleep than a few ounces, you sleep good you hike good. I am now a tree hanger but when I was a ground dweller the Exped pad was the best I found.

Took a walk today
PostQuote from Traffic Jam: “Quote from LIhikers: “Quote from Traffic Jam: “Time Zone and I met for another day hike in Cherokee National Forest and had a great time as usual. We drove up the Cherohala Parkway, parked one car on a bumpy, gravel road near Indian Boundary campground and another one at Eagle Gap parking and hiked 6 miles back to the car. This trail was new to both of us which was very cool. It was mostly downhill but the trail was overgrown with lots of thorny vines and spider webs. I …

Filter or Drops
PostQuote from odd man out: “Quote from LIhikers: “Kathy and I generally use a filter. It clogged half way through our recent Maine hike so we drank the water as we got it out of streams and ponds, with no problems. ” i agree that untreated drinking water in the mountains is usually ok, but you'll never get anyone with any kind of authority to admit that. BTW, don't tell anyone I said that ” youtube.com/watch?v=UmzsWxPLIOo

PostQuote from IMScotty: “No Astro, I was not angry at you I was angry at myself last night for reading only the title of the article and then telling my wife that Loretta Lynn married Kid Rock. She told me I was an idiot, so I checked, and I was an idiot. ” I wonder how many men could retire rich if they had a dollar for every time the wife let them know they were idiots?

Filter or Drops
PostQuote from max.patch: “There's a few places on the AT where there are signs at the water source offically telling you that you that you need to filter or treat your water. ” I felt the need to treat the water in Franklin, NC more than any trail water I drank, I feel safer drinking mt water than city tap water, if the water comes from a well used camp area I might treat it with a drop of bleach for each 8 oz of water.

Saw a funny cartoon on a better way to kill mosquitoes....a small pile of salt, shot of clear tequila next to it, a match stick next to it, a small rock next to it....mosquito sees the salt, thinks it's sugar, eats it and gets thirsty, drinks the tequila thinking it's water and gets drunk, trips on the match stick, hits it's head on the rock and dies of covid-19.

Quote from Astro: “I guess my Mom and Grandmother's garden's were "sustainable" when they utilized the fertilizer from my egg business as a teenager (120 hens). ” I lived in the Harrisonburg area of VA for 5 years... the chicken and turkey capital of the world, chicken houses everywhere....nothing like the smell of chicken "fertilizer" being spread on the fields to awaken the nose and eyes.

I left Gadsden around 11:00 Thursday on the Harley with plans to ride the BRP and visit Mt Mitchell... Dalton, GA hard rain, thought I had waited it out at a gas station only to find it again 10 minutes after I hit the road again... hard rain, motorcycle, night riding, sharp curves don't go well together, made it to Fontana dam about 10:00 and was in the hammock by 11:00, a couple shots of Woodford Reserve and I'm snoozing, rained all nigh and was raining when I woke up, hung out in the hammock …

Donation Time
PostQuote from IMScotty: “Just want to give a financial report and thank everyone for their generous donations. I am sorry if I do not thank you all individually, but some of you use your Hiker names on here, and when the donation comes in your real name, I am sometimes a little unsure who is who. Including a small donation from myself, the most recent donations came to $475. The yearly expenses for this site are $499.20, so I would say that is enough to keep the Cafe up and running for another year…
