Quote from LIhikers: “Resupplying every 3 days seems like you'd spend a lot of time going in and out of towns. ” Not really. Slingshot and I became masters at hitchhiking to town, eating breakfast, resupply, grabbing lunch to go with beers, and sometimes laundry or showers and back on trail in 2-3 hours and still hike a 12 mile day.

REI Reward
PostBought a little clip compass to replace the 10 year old fish eye compass on my hip belt. Now to figure out wear to clip it where it won't get busted or lost. I just like having one for general sense of direction. I've probably used a compass more in towns along the AT than actually on the trail.

PostQuote from IMScotty: “I wish I had grabbed a Subaru Baja when they were still around. ” I sometimes wish I hadn't sold mine. It was rock solid and versatile. Have you looked at the Hyundai Santa Cruz? It's a Baja clone.

Once she left the ridge onto the north side of Lafayette, she may not have had coverage. It points away from the notch and I-93. ” perhaps she was overconfident from previous hikes and decided she didn't need all the gear. If it's …

Quote from Traffic Jam: “Foot surgery is scheduled for the end of January…ugh. It’ll be 8 wks before I can wear a regular shoe and 4 months before resuming regular activity. Gonna miss the good hiking and biking weather but will get in lots of knitting and fiddling. ” It'll be worth it.

Puffy Shout Out
PostQuote from odd man out: “Quote from jimmyjam: “I have the torrid jacket and it is pretty warm. I do not know how it would compare to the REI but if I get out to the west end anytime soon and think about it, I'll pop in to the REI and try one on to try and get an idea for you. ” i was worried the Torrid may not be very warm as it is only 8.5 oz vs 13.75 for the Magma. It's described as a 3 season garment. It has the advantage of not having sewn through baffles. I might like a 3+ season jacket, th…

Puffy Shout Out
PostQuote from odd man out: “BTW, i see this jacket is on sale again. However I'm now thinking of expanding my cold weather gear in case i go somewhere that could have some yucky weather. I was looking at the EE Torid Jacket with Apex insulation. Anyone know how this might compare to the REI Magma wrt warmth? It is substantially lighter. ” I have the torrid jacket and it is pretty warm. I do not know how it would compare to the REI but if I get out to the west end anytime soon and think about it, I'…
