WM Alpinlite (20deg) and I love the puppy so far. Just make sure you fluff them out really good if they have been compressed in the bottom of a backpack but that's any sleeping bag. So far the temp ratings are about right and I'm a cold sleeper. I have also kept a Cat's Meow 20deg which is more like a 30-35deg bag and the friend just picked up a Marmot Sawtooth and loves it. Most of the new bags are fantastic and I'd love to try that Montbell myself. If you only camp 3-4 times a year it's hard t…

I was heading out to get an Osprey Aether 70 and a random ding on my Craigslist Ap chimed. A light detour for a virtually brand new Aether 85 cropped up 2 miles from my house for $100. I couldn't beat that with a stick even if it was the previous gen (no side pockets being the main difference). I'd rather have a larger pack than I need since I camp all year long. It gives me room for more insulation which is more bulk than weight. The friend just sold the Osprey Aura 50 in the pic for a new Arie…

  • I have the Big Agnes Slater 3 which is set up to take that entertainment center. If you look at the top of the tent in the video you will see the standard built-in attic. The one time we brought the tablet knowing it was going to be raining much of the day we simply layed it on there, put a pair of remote speakers and lay back on the air pads watching movies rather than half-sitting up straining our necks and backs. Lesson learned? Save the $50 and put it toward a nice ultra-comfy SeaToSummit Ae…

  • 1 person, Eureka! solo tent which gets more use than I'd expect though feels a bit like a coffin with the tarp in place. (I wish it rolled from the foot end instead of the head end) 2 person, An older Eureka! that I bought in 1988 and have used an average of 15x a year ever since. It finally had the seam in the middle of the floor start flaking. A bit of duct tape and she's still good to go. I can't imagine anything made now lasting that long but it's an 8lb 2-person tent that WAS the super ligh…

  • One other thing someone pointed out: Craigs List can be a fantastic resource! Just make sure you do your homework, ask for pics before you have to drive a long distance and if time/location allows an average seller won't hesitate for a test paddle. There are also frequent demo-days in spring/summer from some of the better shops so that you can get out and try a variety of boats. There are a few that I thought I'd love, did a demo and was pretty soured on, and a few that I thought looked cooky on…

  • I have played with the Remix XP10 during a demo day and really liked it. It's the kind of boat I'd find great for around the Knoxville area when I want to explore the tighter stuff. Until then I have 4 ranging from 14'6 to 17'6 and am not a brand-person as much as I am a function/comfort person. I second the idea of a 14'+ for open water or fast running. Shorter boats are more agile and sometimes more stable but you do 2-3x the work to get the same distance and have a lot less room for carrying …

That looked sarcastic, Traffic...so I think I will just go hide in a corner where it's sorta safe...

  • 1, When is dinner? 2, Nice Clarke. I just got the Vertex and am having a blast with it but we don't have the under-pockets so I'm looking at Incubators. So far loving it! Happy hiking!

I'm sort of that dual-style person in that I sleep in both tents and hammocks. It depends on where I go, how long I'm going to be out, who is going with me and how many. For simple overnight comfort, star gazing, etc. the hammock is going to be tough to beat IF you get one that fits you well and IF you learn how to lay on it properly. Just as there are different kinds of sleeping pads and tents there are different kinds of hammocks depending on how you like to sleep. Some work great for side sle…

Very nice find and while I'm hunting for a pair of Incubator 0's I don't have $600 to shuck out on them. I think I'll swing by REI and the hardware store tomorrow. It's worth a shot AND it's water-proof!
