North Carolina AT
PostWelcome Ontario! I'm all about the train of thought you should enjoy your journey, not rush to meet a destination or deadline out there. Twenty miles per day is quite ambitious and really means you leave little time to stop and enjoy the moment, the views, the camping, the camaraderie, or the solitude. The sound of silence from the top of a mountain is magically beautiful. The smell of spring wildflowers is a scent that is worth not blowing past. The feel of the earth below your feet is a remind…

Quote from max.patch: “going up the AT and then down via another trail is one of the compaints of the BSP rangers. ” I think it makes more sense because traffic is more dispersed by taking separate trails. Quote from Astro: “Once I make it up there I will be glad to go back down the AT, unless someone can convince me another way is significantly easier. ” the Saddle Trail was much easier than the AT. And it was beautiful!

Yes, an extreme lack of information out there about getting home from Katahdin. I"m going to do some research and try to write an article with options. I know how I did it as one way. I walked down the Saddle Trail which drops you right where the Hunt Trail (the A.T.) puts you if you simply walk back down the way you came. That's where my ride was. A friend's dad was shuttling us the last few days after the Hundred Mile Wilderness. When we parted ways, the AT Lodge shuttled me to the bus station…

PostQuote from Astro: “Picking up at Pawling, NY at beginning of June and doing CT-MA-VT-NH. Plan to also get the first 20-30 miles of ME behind too, to make a little easier start next summer. ” Ahhh, southern Maine...the slowest miles on trail. So brutally beautiful. My love/hate relationship with Maine was, I hated how exhausting every single step was, but at the end of every climb was a view that made it absolutely worth every rocky step, slide, leap, crawl. Maine is the most beautiful place I've…

Planning the AT
PostHere ya go! appalachiantrailclarity.com/20…ru-hiker-resupply-points/ I'm working on an article detailing maildrops on my blog site, but here's a quick intro. Maildrops are hard to wrap your mind around as you plan an Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Rest assured, you will figure out your system within a couple of weeks. You have two options for places to send yourself stuff along the way: town post offices and outfitters or hostels who allow maildrops. All addresses and PO zip codes can be found in …

PostThese two folks were SO BADASS! I Quote from max.patch: “thruhikers polar bear and mayberry just spent the last 27 months in the arctic as traveling nurses. edit to add: just saw a few posts above where TW met them at AFSP. 12112506_1150132881687961_1965707083010735805_n.jpg ” These two were badass! They had amazing stories of eating raw whale, polar bears eating people alive, nursing in an Indian village, etc. I could have talked with them for hours!
