Quote from hikerboy: “Quote from Rasty: “Not having shelters would scare off 60%+ of thru hikers.” its not gonna happen though. shelters are too embedded in the culture of the trail, part of the original vision.” I think the vision was a series of work, study, and farming camps. Not three sided rat boxes. The trail has never, or will never be what Mackeye proposed. He was way off. People wanted a wilderness trail. Need to quit hanging on to the flawed mackeye vision. The trail clubs built the she…

Quote from Grinder: “Quote from Rasty: “I'm not sure they should have tried to rescue him.” I had the same thought. Let Darwin work.” I think they can go look for unregistered tresspasser, regardless. It is not a stretch to figure that unregistered tresspassers are probably doing something bad. Even if it wasnt SAR, Id bill them for the S.

Quote from hikerboy: “we may very well end up loving this trail to death. ” Unfortunately, it seems to me, many dont love the trail, they love the party. The trail is trashed in their wake like a used condom.

Quote from OzJacko: “Just carefully read the thing again. Looks like only two possible outcomes. 1. A quota limit on AT hikers allowed in. 2. Katahdin's time as the northern terminus is limited. 2 is not as unlikely as some may think. The start used to be at Mount Oglethorpe remember. It would be a real bummer to finish at Monson or similar.” Yes, but Katahdin isnt the only problem. GSMNP has been accomodating, but is already past capacity as well for the bubble. I would expect limits to get imp…

Quote from jimmyjam: “Wow there are apparently more self entitled self centered a holes out there than i thought.” You must not get around much. I blame Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg for much of our issues today. The rest, belongs to Steve Jobs.

The most interesting part of books and journals, is the misadventures at the beginning due to lack of preparedness or knowledge, IMO. This is my honest opinion......95% of them suck. Really , really bad. I cannot stand to read a book that is just a day by day description of hiking from point A to point B, and seeing sleepy, sneezy , and dopey. I have probably 20 on Kindle that I couldnt finish. (good thing most were free or just a couple $) They are not books , the are nothing but trail journals…

PostMy plan is to retire at 55, hopefully with an incentive package, and start drawing partial pension. Then I will continue to work, only work contract basis and work no more than 9 months out of the year. The older I get, the less I will work. I dont plan to actually retire outright until after 65. There might be one or two 6 month sabbaticals thrown in between jobs.

Vacation time is adequate. Im trying to wrangle enough extra time next yr to do the Colorado Trail....

PostQuote from hikerboy: “sooooo.... if i do the jmt next summer--nobo or sobo?” I did it this past summer. Highly reccomended. Sobo has a lot of advantages. - no acclimatization issues - as hard as it is to get permit, its still easier at Yosemite than Whitney - doing an in-the-dark summit of Whitney to finish with sunrise there is fricking awesome -Spend a little time poking around in Yosemite and then you wont be able to get out of there fast enough. Its like Disneyland. None of Yosemite even "fe…
